from living in the UK my experience is thus; great chocolate and an immense variety of chocolate in the UK, but the sweets are poor

denmark on the other hand has a wonderful collection of sweets, many named after seagull poop, cows udders, and various other waste and trash related goodness...

i dont think finns have a monopoly on the stuff, when i worked in Ireland (with danes, finns, norweigans and swedes) everytime anyone came back from scandinavia with any kind of lakrids/liquorice it was gobbled up very quickly, a co worker even had her own "stash" of lakrids she had brought from denmark but did not want to share!

i think its definetely an acquired taste though, as i was never succesful in converting anyone not from nordics to the stuff, but have not met many scandi's who dont love it

Actually I would put British sweets up against those of any other country and we would do ok. Some of our classics are brilliant, Strawberrys and Cream, Rhubarb and Custard, Cola Cubes, Pontefract Cakes, Pear Drops, Sherbert Lemons, Licorice Allsorts and Jelly Babies.
