Lets give you two scenarios that happened to me last week at work (I work in retail)

1) Banned a bloke from my store, escorted him out and he threatened to come back and kill my guard and me. We grabbed him, called the police and the guy broke down in tears and started apologising. He had reached into his pocket while threatening us, intimating he had a knife. He had no weapons.

2) Banned a bloke from my store, he got his stinky alcohol breath right in my face and started waggling his fingers at me. I told him to do one, at which point he reached into his jacket and pulled a stella bottle out, which he procedded to try and bottle me with.

Now, the first guy was a foreigner, over here on a visa. The second guy was a white english chav. And drunk, and probably off benefits, scrounging off those of us (white or not) paying taxes.

One thing I don't understand is that here, in Sweden, and apparently in UK and probably other countries in Europe there is a complete lack of civil courage (don't know the english word for it, translated from swedish) among people.

In Sweden I've mostly heard from other people, someone getting robbed/assaulted in a crowd and nobody acts, nobody makes a move to try help the victim.

While I've seen many other similar incidents in Colombia/Spain where it's seems like complete strangers turn into your personal bodyguards and does everything to stop the perpetrator. My dad (he is swedish) told me once when he was walking the streets in Bogota he had 3 younglings come up to him with a "gun" under their shirt and in a matter of seconds they took his keys, wallet, clock and were on the run. They probably got 5 metres before they were caught by civilans and litterarily carried back to apologize and hand the stuff back. That's just truly amazing.

To me, being close to such an incident without making a move or anything to try stop it is a sign of acceptance and agreement to the crime.

Obviously I wouldn't jump in Jackie Chan style and stop armed bank robbers. But in a situation like in this clip there is no doubt I would act even if it meant I'd get a punch in my face.

If they are not doing anything to stop it I do think it gives a sign of agreement to it. But yes, I realise it's probably just a matter of being afraid of getting in trouble for standing up for one's beliefs.

If there's any cowardice then a degree of that can be atrributed to the "system" over here in the UK. Have-a-go-heros can end up getting into trouble themselves and/or getting sued by the trouble-makers for assault ! You got to be realistic. In this day and age, if you jump in throwing punches etc then if you're lucky you might get punched back - on the other hand you could end up getting stabbed. Or 6 weeks later - when its all over - you could end up getting a visit late at night from mates of the bloke you decked. There are many reasons why people don't get involved.
