Bow experience..

Hi there.

Im totally new subscriber to this forum, tho i've read posts lots of times, and now I thought it was a good time to ask something myself. (sorry if this has been posted before)

Anyway, atm im playing this alt hunter in BG, and considering to move on, and maybe hit lvl 50 someday.
So my question to this, and guess that goes for all realms, tho the speed and other things might differ a bit from realm to realm:

What is your best experince with the different >speed< of bows theres available (What do you prefer most). High speed and low crit-shot or slow speed and high-crit?, is it just bad to use a slow bow, or does the RA's compensate for that so you can use slow spd, but still have decent draw time and dmg without waiting a weekend to redraw.. Also, how much diff in dmg output are there from a slow to fast?

Next and prolly last questions: Has quickness something to do with your draw time?

That would be all :)

Acibeth - 50 shammy
Zodie - 24 hunter :)

Next patch, which we get in the next few weeks there is a new archer ability called rapid fire. When this arrives there will be no point and no need to have fast bows. You will want the slowest bow possible, if you want to fire faster you can then use rapid fire to fire.

Slow bow and maxed quickness is the way to go. Thou I love my rather fast Dragonshadow Bow. It has a crit shot cap of 890ish for me while my duskwood heavy composite bow caps at 932. The difference is not THAT big as you can see but it is there.

If you use spellcrafted stuff put a quickness bonus on your bow and a strength bonus on your spear.

different bows have different ranges too don't forget which may also affect which bow you want to use...

Kay, that was a question i forgot, about the range on normal Composite bows (in this case Comp bow), great and heavy Comp bows... but thanks for answers :)

huh?

I was under the impression that all (mid at least) bows have the same range.

It is the arrows which modify your range capabilities.

Slow bow is the way to go - using a 5.5 speed Dusky Heavy LB my damage cap is 1025 on a crit shot, always nice to be able to clean someone up in one shot :). With the addition of rapid fire in 1.62 fast bows will be practically redundant anyway.

As for calculating bow draw times, this is a very handy site.

I'd say the same. Been playing hunter for 2 years now and never noticed a difference in ranges. If there is one then its minimal.

k, well in hib there is a difference (I'm sure xest/falcon can tell you what exactly) so i assumed there was in mid too..

Can't remember exactly but I think Hib bow ranges are:
Heavy Recurve (16.5dps, 5.5spd) : 1900
Regular Recurve (16.2dps, 4.7spd) : 2100
Short Recurve (16.2dps, 4.0spd) : 1900

I might be wrong on the heavy or the short as afaik all 3 bows have different ranges, but I'm pretty damn sure it's 2100 for the regular (then scouts get 2200).

I always just use a short recurve but I AM more melee oriented, meaning if I'm meleeing a mage and they quickcast root me I wanna switch to bow ASAP and get them interrupted after their quickcast before they cast and interrupt me and nuke me to death. Also if say an assassin ambushes me, decides he can't win and tries to flee or just kite me I need to pop off arrows fast to stop him restealthing due to annoying interrupt code making it hard to pop the arrow off in time before he stealths sometimes with a slow bow.

I'll probably use the 16.5dps bow and rapid fire next patch, if I get it, I'm still pretty tempted to ignore RF and PA and stay at 27 recurve, I'm quite happy it and still get plenty of 900dmg+ crit shots on people with uncapped resists and I don't really use bow enough still to justify dropping melee for extra bow spec, nothing in 1.62 really takes my fancy to change that either.

1800 I think i read somewhere for the short one, might be 2000 for the regular aswell, not sure.

Btw if u have archerrelated questions www.critshot.com offers a lot of knowledge.

actually great & heavy bows have about 1 kobold length longer range..

its pretty easy to test, target a forge, wield a heavy bow and move backwards repeatedly pounding your draw button, when you reach your limit stay right inside, and switch to the normal bow (im not 100% sure about heavy bows, i only tested it with great vs normal)

edit: Xest you melee gimp, let the real archers about this

Blame Hoster for chain raping me as a young Elf, I wanted my vengeance upon SBs :)

I was 50 recurve bow until we got our respecs, then I dropped to 37 recurve bow and am now 27 recurve so been through the lot really, as I say I think I'll stay 27 recurve.

Shike may well be right on the bow ranges sounds reasonable, it's definetely a noticeable difference if you pay attention, easier to notice with a height advantage on your target I think :)

Isn't the Regular and Short recurve bow's 16.1dps?

Have to check that out.
