Books you keep meaning to read but can't quite get into.

I don't often not finish a book, even if they are crap, but the one outstanding book from the few I have not finished is Mervyn Peake's 'Goremenghast' (sp) I think I got as far as the first 150 pages before I gave up in despair. Another book which I am still reading (has taken 6 months so far) is John Brunner's 'Stand on Zanzibar' I will finish that one day but it is very heavy going.

Here's a tip for you lot: Try reading an article or an essay on the book you're having trouble finishing. It might give you that special angle you're looking for or simply help you with your motivation.

When you're talking about "classics" (in lack of a better term) like "1984" or "LoTR", just to mention two, there's tons of stuff just ready for you to dive into. And lots of it can be found on the net as well.

Narcassistic Wounds sounds interesting. As does The elegant universe.

Neuromancer - William Gibson

I should try harder but my effort levels are at 0.

Currently loving Philip Pulman's Dark Materials trilogy to bits though. Love it.

I found with lotr that the first half or so of fellowship just doesnt really grab you, So at that point its a pretty easy book to put down. If you can persevere beyond that though then it really does improve.

Managed to struggle through it, got abotu 2/3 of the way through The Two Towers, then put the book down. Haven't picked it up since, doubt I ever will.

I'll go on record and say what I always say about Tolkein: The man was a hack.

I very rarely fail to finish a book although I do find some very slow-going. My biggest problem is that I keep buying mroe books to read and they start piling up on the bookshelves. Most fantasy/Scifi I buy normally gets read fast - It's the more historical/factual ones whi seem to sit on my shelves longest.
Current list of part/unread books:

Churchill - Roy Jenkins ( about 200 pages in - It's not got to the more interesting periods of his life yet so is slow going. I keep on having to have a break to read a different book)
Quicksilver - Neal Stephenson (about 50% through - it's not a patch on his previous novels. It is well written and interesting but seems so slow )
The Gulf Conflict 1990-91, Lawrence Freedman
Edward Heath autobiography
London, a biography, Peter Ackroyd
Redcoat, Richard Holmes
Cromwell, Anotonia Fraser
and probably others I can't remember

Also a book I'll pick up after the current one is Glue - Irvine Welsh. Tried to read it a while ago. Since I've recently finished another novel by him, Porno, I think I'm ready for another.

I've finally managed to read a fairly contempory novel that isn't fantasy or sci-fi; 'Bridget Jones's Diary', it was recommended by a girl which probably influenced my reading it so I'd have something to talk about next time I saw her, but it is very funny.
