Guys, recently I managed to watch a blueray disk on my pisstree for the first time (was Batman/The Dark Knight btw)

While I was quite impressed with the overall quality I noticed something strange that I wanted to ask you about: I was under the impression that a BR disk would show content at 1080p, ergo full screen on my HD tv? What I noticed was that sometimes the image would be full screen, and other times it would be letterboxed. At first I put it down to the subtitles (I was running Dutch subs for my friends who were there), but later we noticed that the subs did not influence the picture because they were sometimes on in full screen images and sometimes with letterboxed images played back.

Anyway, I looked at both the ps/3's and tv's settings and I can't find anything that relates to the size of the playback (because I am a noob/idiot/gay/insert insult here), but I presume that the image was sometimes full screen and sometimes letterboxed because the ps/3 and tv's scaling mechanisms were interfering with each other? the ps/3 is plugged directly into my telly with a HDMI cable, and into the AV amp with glass so I guess there should be no issues there. Please helpor me with joor wisdomes!

1920x1080 is 16:9 and most movies display in a wider screen than this. The reason The Dark Knight flicks between the two in the actual film is that certain scenes are shot in imax which is full 16:9 but the majority are standard cinema widescreen (forgot what ratio that is, but it's letterboxed on a 16:9 tele).

Incidentally you should see those imax scenes on my projector, I guarantee you'd spooge your pants within 12.7 seconds. </epeen>

aha, so what was happening was supposed to happen all along? I don't have to do anything to sort it out?

also, I'd love a HD projector but they're soooo expensive :(

also, I admire the fact that you think I could actually last a full 12.7 seconds :D

56 inches? Ultimate? Wat?

Anything less than 106" is clearly an utterly inferior product.

A lot of BR movies are in 1920:800 (cinema standard) so most of the time you won't get full screen :)

More info on aspect ratio : Aspect ratio (image) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

what manner of idiocy is this? I was lead to believe that this 1080p lark was where the cool cats lived, but now in practice I find that the BR movies tend to be in formats that make my lovely tv letterbox to get most of the image on screen?

also, I believe that I find mixed mode usage in a single disk to be particularly unamusing. that's like broadcasting part of the news in black and white or something, eg extremely gay imo.

The mixed thing is very uncommon, in fact The Dark Knight is the first one I've seen that changes ratio like that.

As to the 1080p thing, as you know all tele's nowadays are 16:9 which is what television is broadcast in. Most movies are in a wider aspect ratio and so need letterboxing on standard widescreen tv's. It's perfectly normal, though I'll admit when I got my first widescreen TV all those years ago I was a bit miffed that there were still borders.

aha so it's just my luck that I choose a mixed disk as the first one to view, like evar. the dvd rental place also has other BR disks. I was thinking of watching Hancock, because the film always struck me as funny.

I shall do that and report back!

Thing is teeds, i'm swinging more to a TV recently. I love having a projector and the large screen, great for movies, but I am soooooo tired of having to shut blinds and curtains during the day in the summer if I want to play some Pro Evo or catch some TV.

If I keep my job after the recession and major "restructure" where I am, I will be in the market for TV, but probably use the projector for movies because you can't beat it for that.

Regarding that Philips cinema TV - gets negative reviews, you're better off with a normal TV and pocket the difference to spend on a projector.

Yeah I'm the same - for casual stuff I'll use the tele, for a movie I'll fire up the projector. It is a bit of an operation to get everything going but it's definitely worth it, and I only use it at night when I don't need to worry about making sure no light seeps in to the room.

The reason for the change in aspect ratio is that some parts of batman were filmed for imax cinema screens (i.e. ultra hi-def, can't remember the exact res, something like 4x1080p) which has a different ratio.

It's out there somewhere on google. Or it might even be on the back of the box.

*goes to check*

Yup. On the back where it says the specs of the video it mentions imax at a ratio of 1.78:1.
