ps3 media server.

It will transcode the file so you can watch it. Don't do it over wi-fi though, you will get stuttering.

PS3 doesn't support MKV files (grrr), but mkv2vob can quickly convert a file if your media server can't cope with them.

I have the PS3 connected to my ex HD via ethernet and its fine, but a few things i have DL are MP4 and MKV

I have a DNLA disc that i got with my new sammy TV which has a media server built in, and i have installed all relevent software but the TV wont play the BR files either

Chet, when you say PS3 media server, is that a add on to what is already installed in the PS3? Do i need to DL a add on to play the files?

I will also have a look at that convertor too GReaper, thanks fella's

ps3 media server is a java program that you run on your PC, it will transcode the files into a format the ps3 can play on the fly. It is very very good, but it would mean adding a PC into the setup you already have. In your case GReapers solution may be better, although it takes more time.

am I the only one with an imagination vivid enough to read the title of this thread and picture a bluray disc slicing through a particular console? :)

I gave up with ps3media server thingy, it got on my tits in the end, worked then it didn't.

MKV2VOB ftw! and also have a look at DLNA Nas hard drives Ed, my streaming life has been amazing since I got one, plug it into your router and job done don't even have to have your pc on. I like the Buffalo NAS and its DLNA.

I donwload a film, convert it with mkv2vob making sure it gets chucked onto my NAS and its job done, so very easy but honestly for the most ease a NAS server is needed.

This is the one I got - http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/79635...-Storage-External-USB-Hard-Drive/Product.html

2 copies? I delete the mkv file when its done, no point in keeping it is there?

PS3 Media Server, obviously. Not so obviously you should be remuxing rather than transcoding. Seems to have a far higher success rate and uses less CPU oomph as well.

well considering the file mkv2vob spits out wont work on on anything other than vlc, its a good idea to keep the orignal if you use other media devices as well. not a big issue but for some it is.

as for the nas box how easy is it to replace the hdd? been thinking one that one for bit now

Readynas = goodness. I have one to keep my photos and music stored in a redundant manner. It's a piece of piss to use. Plus you can buy it with drives :p

Ugly fucker innit? More importantly, is it quiet? I'm thinking about getting a NAS, but I need something silent.

It's not pretty but mine was £150 notes and came with the 500GB HDD + Free Second 500GB HDD so I wasn't complaining plus it's stashed in the side of my desk so I don't see it.

I can't say that I notice mine making a noise at all but the best comparison I can make is that to me it's much quieter than my old shuttle was with it's quiet icepipe cooling. It only makes a burst of noise when you first turn it on (spins up all the fans) like anything else, then I don't notice it, not even when it's chugging away moving data.

The only thing I would say is be very clear what you want to use a NAS for. I only wanted torrent (so I could leave PC off) and media sharing so the readynas was perfect for me. So basically I've got it running transmission bittorrent (which has a lovely remote interface on web + iphone) and using the default media gubbins. You may want more though and if so I'd read up on the add ins for the various offerings before taking the plunge.

As an added bonus I've now hooked my printer into it and been able to throw out a horribly long and noticeable USB cable.
