Blue lines down screen?

What does this mean and how can I fix it?

Happened shortly after installing some windows updates although I have no idea if it is related.

Basically the screen has a number of vertical blue lines, when you move the mouse around you can see the individual dots changing.

However it comes on randomly and dissapears when I install / uninstall anything. It does come back though randomly a bit later.

Guessing either monitor or gfx card although as it works fine sometimes I don't think all is what it seems :S

edit - it was fine then I clicked post and it came back grr!

Ah, I've seen this problem before. If you don't cure it within a certain amount of hours you will certainly get blue line vision if you use the PC on a regular basis. Blue Line Vision(BLV) is a very common illness and can cause dizzyness, confusion and often results in pulling a bird who is ugly as the sufferer can not see through the blue lines.

To cure this problem start mspaint, and get a small brush square shaped colour yellow(opposite of blue) then take a screenshot(PRNT SCRN) paste this in to mspaint and go over the lines carefully with the yellow paint brush. This should cancel out the BLV you have at the moment, although may cause you to obtain it's more deadlier illness YLV if due care and attention is not paid whilst curing BLV.

You should repeat this every time you want to look at a different page.

actully yellow isnt opposite blue :< blue + yellow = green... the opposite of blue is orange (yellow + red) complementary colours and all

Actually monitors work with the RGB scheme though, which means "red-green-blue", so there is no yellow at all

Btw, the system you mention is the additive color scheme, but there's also the substractive scheme, which takes white as start and by substracting yellow, magenta and cyan you get black...mkay? =)

I never heard of a "parrot color scheme" though, whereas the others are rather official

Anyway I think I have narrowed down the problem, computer was on all day so I'm guessing something was overheating added to that it was very hot day in general (yes it should be fine but I have a feeling its approaching it's last legs) have shut it down for an hour and everything seems Gucci again!

Shut it down and leave it for an hour or so, when you turn it back on it will either come back from a heating issue (would guess it's then on its last legs) or its a freak one off.

Okay the problem has come back today.

I switched round LCD's with another computer temporarily, and now both systems work fine. So I can't tell if it is a monitor or gfx card problem. Grr...

Have you checked the graphics card is sitting right in the mobo? Remove it and put it back in.

Seems to start very randomly, computer can be fine for some hours then suddenly appears. Sometimes it randomly goes aswell but not sure how to make it go.

Because pressing prnt scrn doesn't actually take the picture from the monitor, but from the computer. And a loose cable only effects the stuff going out into the monitor. Get it? He couldn't take a screenshot about a monitor cable issue

Have you tried slapping your computer around a bit?

Slapped it like a bitch and felt like a dentist this morning with toothbrush + gfx card.

Anyway I asked the ubernerds over at techguy.org instead and they confirmed it was a knackard gfx card so picking up a new one in morn. Glad it wasn't the newer more expensive lcd.
