Bloody school run ...

Was dropping my kid off at nursery this morning and parked where I always do.

Got my kid from the back to the passenger seat as norm, told him to stay put until I came and got him. Looked over my shoulder and then in the mirror before opening my door (red car/little van thing was just passing).

Opened my door and BAM, a 4x4 coming from round the corner (concealed by the red car/van thing) drives straight into my fucking door. Door was only open about 5 - 8 inches and this fucker decided they'd obviously prefere to use as much of left hand side of the road as possible as opposed to the other metre or so of road on thier right, totally unused.

Exchanged details, they're blaming me for opening the door and Im telling them that they could have easily gone round the door if it was fully open, without having to leave our side of the road.

Spoke to insurance peeps who said due to the nature it'd be a 50:50 claim. After abvising the other driver of this they tell me 'Oh, I'll be claiming anyway as I have no NCB due to claiming for a similar thing last year!'. Mother fuckers, now I'm gonna have to pay an excess, have my insurance double and listen to the wife moan.

Anyhow, no real point to this post apart from having sat there this afternoon waiting to pick my kid up, no other car came within a metre of my parked car. Just so fucking infuriating. Kept on telling me to hurry up the exchange as they were late for work.

I'd have to agree with insurance and chalk it down to luck and experience.
As a driver, you need to have your wits about you and expect everything, but if we expected every car door to open, we'd never make it down most town streets without driving on the pavement.
As someone getting out of a car, you need to look and be careful (obviously, as you had done by looking in your mirrors) but in both circumstances, you can never tell whats going to happen next - you can only be so careful, and of course with blind corners and with other stationary vehicles about - luck is gonna always play a large part.

I was in the 4x4's position not too long ago, but as the fucking donut who did the door opening wasn't careful, she opened into the side of my car and put a large scratch down back door and wing. Took a photo of it, said I was clearly half way past the car in the first place therefore only fault can possibly be the door opener - to which both insurance parties agreed.

Very unfortunate in your case though :/

My take on the first post is that the 4x4 drives however they please without regard for other road users as they seem quite ok with the fact that this is not the first time they have smashed into someone's half open car door!!

Meh, it's only a door. Imagine if your kid had been standing between the door and the car. Considering it's a school drop of area, you would have expected the driver to drive with more care and attention than if it was just an ordinary road.

Also, what Swift said, though kid might not be old enough. That said, I started walking to school on my own when I was 6 (20 min walk).

Yes, you're right. My 3 1/2 year old boy should stop being so lazy and cycle to school through central Croydon, of course taking care to keep his speed up on his Superman Bike (w/stabalisers) so as not to get mown down.

I had an accident the other day aswell, first ever and it wasn't my fault at all. Infact due to my careful driving no one got hurt.

Stationary at a zebra crossing after a round-about to let a pedestrian cross, and a car goes in to the back of me. Checked out mum(who'd just recently been in surgery for carpal tunnel, she was ok. Looked up and saw the old lady looking quite a bit like this , she continued walking. Got out the car and the other driver admitted he wasn't looking ahead. He was looking to the right for oncoming traffic. Was probably less then 10mph but my rear nearside bumpers borked, as his is a company car he won't have to pay for it. Seemed a nice guy anyway and was straight forward as I didn't have a massive cluepon as to what I'm supposed to do. Oh and luckily I had my handbrake on so didn't end up running the woman over. I shouldn't be so nice to ped's they always get drivers in accidents! It's all there fault! I'm gonna play some Carmageddon!

Got it accessed, it needs 3 days repair and my insurance say there going to give me a courtesy car, although there not really following up on it(supposed to have had a call yesterday, rung up today and supposed to get a call 2 hours ago still nothing). I still have the backup of the garage courtesy car, both of which are free. Just the insurance one will be like for like.

Went over the same zebra crossing yesterday and I saw a ped running accross the other side of it, I accelerated. FUCK YOU PEDS!!! You aren't getting me again!

If you're really that annoyed about it, take up the claim with an insurance specialist (e.g. the one Tom suggested) and make the other **** pay!

Valid points. But, um, whats happened in the lovely Streatham?

Oh and to my own detriment, I just want the other driver to go away. I've been advised by friends the easiest thing to do is to give them cash to save myself a loss of NCB but tbh, I'd rather be 900quid out of pocket with the insurance company (Excess, then higher premium) than give that fucker a penny.

The Mrs saw the other car and there's simply a small crack and a bit of plastiuc missing :/
