sister is off to australia for a year or so, and was wondering about a blog type thingy.
are there any places that do it for you effectively, or is it better to get a website and some software ?
shes not overly technically minded, so anything simple would be better

any thoughts ?

I'd probably recommend using a free, hosted solution like Wordpress.com, Vox, Blogger etc. All these are free, simple to use, hosted elsewhere, and often blogging, photos, and all the usual suspects.

If you wanted something more advanced then you could buy a domain, find some cheap hosting, and install your own blog software. This is fairly simple, not to expensive, and allows for more customization. However, I think it's maybe a bit overkill right now.

Blogger is really user friendly, but I use Wordpress on my own blog and its never been a problem.

Depends on how much time and money you want to spend, hosting it somewhere else doesn't give you as much freedom but its nice for quick things (Blogger.) Wordpress is nice for adding features such as the plugins and anti spam/admin links for quick posting.

Wot he said. There's a few; Travelpod (the one I used) is very good, with interactive maps and all that malarky. The other one that was popular with lots of people I met was Get Jealous.
