Well first thing that strikes me as a bad move is that you lied about it.

Second, you should just tell them to piss off. They have no right to intrude on your personal passwords or such, without some legal reason and until they do, they still need to let you remove any personal info.

Had a talk with him about it already, telling him that the only merit of me handing over my password would be for him to access my private email, without me knowing of it, but he wouldn't have any of it, and it turned into a "You will, because I tell you to" kind of discussion, so walked out.
brb, Windows update wants to reboot my system for an "important update". Need to save shit within 3 minutes :/

Ah ok, well, you can tell him "No, i will not, because the law tells me to." and if he tries to fire you on that basis, sue the f*cker.

Tell them the password, then reset your password. They will have an official password, just not the up to date one!

Done something similar. Added the administrator account password to this computer on that paper, so they can access the system, but just not my private mail and such, and added a nonreal one as my private password. They have no use for it, and if they uphold their end of the bargain, they'll never need to find out, and if they don't, I guess I'll find out about it, because they'll probably tell me to hand over a valid one.

If there are laws on this, tell him no. What can he do otherwise? He can't sack you.

Ah well, that might work.

If they confront you, you can go "Must have written it wrong..but...First off, what the hell were you snooping in my private files? And second, i checked this with a friend and i was gonna bring it up that what you're doing is illegal."

Perfect crime :D

Yeah, the brave last words..... :p

He can't sack you for that specifically, but seriously, in a small company, you don't really get away with stuff like that that easily. It's not really a relationsimprover to do that kind of thing, and generally doesn't go down well with most bosses, so they'll find a way.

How it works in the UK at least somewhere with a decent IT policy. It is there property the PC is theres and anything stored on it is theres so they can look as much as they want. If im honest i think your making too much off it if they wanted my password i would give it to them, leave your PC on at home and use a website like logmein.com to control it. Then you do not need to leave any personal information on your machine and do not need to worry.

I suppose you're right.

Can't you change any settings for your personal passwords, where you type them in manually or something?

This is exactly where privacy laws come in----- Ohw, sorry, forgot. You guys in the UK depricated them all. But besides that.... It's simply not necessary. You don't need a user's password to get into his account. You can reset the password it in the management console on the server, but at that point the user knows someone has been on his account and thus can ask for reasons. You can also access all the data from the administrator's account, but you wouldn't be able to access this freddyshouse account for example.
The data on this system is secure. On every logoff it's synchronised with the latest on the server, and at night its backed-up.
An administrator account can access all files and drives on the system, so the password is only, and only necessary to gain access to my personal email (gmail) and personal logins to forums and stuff //WITHOUT// me knowing, or notifying me.

They may want access to your files and Work Email on days you call in sick without having to get an Administrator to reset your password? Alot of the teams where i work have a xls file with all the password saved for that reason why wait for IT to come in then reset the password then make sure the user knows his new password just to keep an eye on his work email? It might just be a case that someone else though it would be a good idea so your boss is doing it.

If i was your boss they way you are acting over your Work computer would make me suspicious and i would have already reset your password and checked your machine. Im used the way the companys i work for have done it with IT policys saying there is no such thing as private though so maybe its just me.

I do not keep anything on my work machine that i would care if my boss saw so it does not bother me if he wants to snoop around.

That is wrong mate, they can't look at anything on your pc without prior permission/agreements, and even then additional agreement/permission needs to be sought when accessing personal files. You can see what file types are stored on the drive but not the actual content

However in a corporate enviroment you often sign a waver in the computer guidelines to the effect that they own everything on the pc, usually there is a pop-up box you need to press ok to stating anything stored on the pc is their property

Why is your Work password the same as your personal password?

If we, i say we cause i work in IT and can access anyones PCs, want to look at anything on the PC we can without even logging into the machine itself.

I use Dameware and can access the entire system without anyones knowledge. I also used to work in Personnel and can tell you any decent company will have a comuter fair use in the contract of employment which states the PC is not to be used for any personal use and can be audited at any time

EDIT: Which we do btw. Its funny how many times i've taken itunes off peoples PC just to be a pain. I've even taken off limewire from someones PC, cheeky buggers cant even change the background anymore

That what i meant by with a decent IT policy :)

We have stopped the changing of desktops as well as the installation of software too. I love having people moan they can't install a codec so they cant watch youtube and they think you should allow it :)

If they tried to take my youtube/winamp/netradio/porn/whatnot away at work, i'd say;

"Look, Mister IT man, why don't you take your anally repressed IT nazi protocols , wrap 'em in bacon and stick 'em up your old ladies dried-up-wow-sick poonanny while she nibbles on your overgrown testies!"

If you spoke to me like that chances are id relax your settings ;) But moaning and telling me you need Youtube to do your work would mean you get nothing.

I'd install ubuntu and watch our incompetent outsourced IT dept fail to find the control panel...
Or perhaps even solaris or something. Even better :)

Infact, I regularly /do/ need things like youtube or similar sites, for totorial / howto films on certain program features.

Heh, aye. But i could set 'em right back up ;)

Nah, IT goons are cool. They mean that i don't have to update/install anything 'cause i can just go "Bu' i dun wanna!". If they say something ain't cool for "workplace", i'm cool.

Most businesses in the gaming industry don't give a f*ck luckily :drink:

Personally, if my boss told me "do X because I tell you" and with no other reasoning at all, and continued to do so after serious talks, I'd quit.

Being in the army, I would expect that sort of thing, but I'm not in yet, and I wouldnt take that sort of shite from someone in a civi work environment - there just isnt any need for it.

I guess it really depends on the field you support, for example we aren't allowed to look at any of the finance systems data (as in look inside files) without them being able to see what we are doing, this includes e-mail, documents, filestore etc..

Or maybe it's just where i work :p

this kind of backfired on my once, never again will i use a term for oral sex as a pass word tbh (really, its true, it happened).

but if you want to make your boss uncomfortable maybe have the pw as "noseyinterferingspyingscumwhocantkeepouttamyprivateemail"

or

"igoterectiledysfunction" that may stop him from accessing your pc tbh.

My company is very Departmental If you work in Finance you map finance network drives only ect. Plus permissions and hidden shares make it difficult for people to stumble into somewhere they are not allowed. Can't really say you typed \\server\share$ accidentally :)
