Meh, I'm bored at work :(

Man, you work late. :(

Anyway, clearly games should come under freedom of expression. As should porn.

Doesn't sound quite so palletable that tho eh?

Weird that you can have sex at 16 but not buy porn....

The bottom line is that games should have the same freedom of expression as other mediums. These same objections were raised over Films, TVs and even music (won't someone think of the children!) but thankfully common sense prevailed - as it should with games.

I don't dispute that games shouldn't have the same freedom of expression as other mediums. I just don't agree that freedom of expression (in all mediums) necessarily extends to the right to be able to expose children to graphic violence. If an adult wants to purchase a film or game and allow their child access to it then fine but that decision should be made by the parent and not by the kid walking into a store with enough money to buy it.

Was gonna mention this but you got there first. Always find it amusing how Americans are seemingly perfectly happy to be exposed to vast amounts of violence but at the first hint of sexual content they go crazy to get it censored.

The good thing about the US 1st Amendment law is that it protects the public from people with opinions like yours Krazeh :)

That's why games have ratings already, but the responsibility lies with the parent - not the government.

A national built on religious piety and by protected 500 million privately owned guns. No wonder when it is a country of extremes, everything they tend to do ends at one pole or the other, half measures definately isn't the american way and that is what makes the whole 'American Dream' such a comical hypocracy.

Yep. Like I said - if christianity wasn't such a pit of violence then the law would have passed - and games gone the way of porn...

...along with books and films and anything else that requires people who "don't like it" or "thinks, rationally, it would be better this way" to FUCK OFF

How can the responsibility lie with the parent when the child is able to access the material in question without the parent's knowledge or consent? Once the child reaches the point where they have access to their own money then the child is able to obtain a game or a film regardless of the parent's choice.

If I had kids I'd damn well pay attention to what they were playing/watching.

Like many here, I watched many many X rated and banned movies at the dawn of VHS/Betamax. I was like what.. 10. never did me or 99% of ppl watchin em any harm what so ever. Some people just have predispositions to certain behaviours, if not video games, would just be something else that turns these vunerable few into sociopaths.

In terms of crime a recent study showed that having the kids stuck at home playing violent video games meant less crime than actually having them outside playing.
