Someone was telling me about this a few weeks ago, I was sceptical, but now it appears as though it might happen.

I'm thinking that you could walk into Gap, buy some jeans, and any Gap affiliated stores would scan your Gap jeans (that you are now wearing), and know how to push new products at you. Just think - you could be walking up to the TV section in Tesco, a scanner reads the chip in your clothes, and suddenly, a number of the TVs for sale change their display to advertise Gap clothing?

Scary? If somebody like me can think of it, that means somebody cleverer can do it, and only new laws will be able to stop it happening.

I was watching a film not so long ago (forget the name), and a guy was walking around a shopping mall.

All of the advertising boards were pitching stuff at him, using his name etc.

I guess stores putting markers on stuff bought is a bit like having sites put cookies on ones browser... certainly feasible.

Now there's a worrying film - one wonders how such corporations would have got hold of everyone's retinal scans...

Aren't you glad we actually have a Data Protection Act over here?

Reminds me of a book I read in the '70s (Space Merchants), in which the advertising corporations projected ad images directly onto your eyes as you strolled around.

This was on the news a few weeks back. It to me, is a blatent invasion of privacy. Any purchases you make with a credit/debit/storecard/rewardpoints card can be logged and made available to 3rd party affilliates.

I thought that was possible already?

The PFID chip is in the packaging not the product.

Yes, but who or what is going to stop them planting the chip into the product itself?

similar, but not about invasion of privacy. in some GAP (i think) store in america, yo u strip down to your boxers, stand in a machine that uses cameras to take pictures of your body, you then select the type of jean you want, cut etc. then the details are sent to the factory where they are custom made.

Capitalism ? The fact that there are not enough morons already willing to buy GAP jeans, there will be even fewer morons willing to buy them with inbuilt RFID chips.

And how do you know they aren't already doing it!

You didn't think those studs on your jeans were to stop the pockets from tearing did you?! :uhoh:
