Section 74 of The Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2003 allows councils to check if a hedge is too high.

There's something wrong with this country

how high is too high?

Its actually not as awful as it sounds. A hedge can be 2metres high which is enough to block out most things. If the hedge is higher than that it may be considered to high if it poses a danger, such as blowing over in high winds or if it obscures a view. The laws are detailed but most of them are only applicable in extreme situations.

Yes ?

I'm sorry Sir, but we're from the Council. Under section yawn of the blah blah Act we're entitled to come in and shag yer missus. We need to make sure she's not smuggling any geraniums into the country that might conceal mini nuclear bombs for use on tall hedges.

...still agree.

Cr*p reasons to come in, but i'd let 'em. I have nothing in my apartment that's illegal or can be used against me so...

Disagree strongly. Innocent until proven guilty and all that.

Tbh if someone asked to come and see some stamp on the back of my fridge i would tell em to fuck right off and go and chase the maufacturers of the fridge and failing that the agency that allowed it to enter the country. In the mean time get off my lawn before i shoot you with my spud gun.

Just like every other law it is open to abuse and mark my words you will see them abused.

Well ofcourse they'd need a court order(like in finland even the cops do to get inside unless you invite them), and you can only get one of those with atleast a minor crime suspicion :D

But as such, if it came to pass that they didn't need to, i'd let people in as i've done nothing wrong.

I think the only time police are allowed in with no paperwork is suspicion of drugs? If they walk past your house and smell weed they are allowed to search it and everyone in it??

Actually miht be true. And even then just smoking some isn't enough, they need atleast a minor drug offence and if i remember correctly, smoking one for own use isn't even minor.

Not enough to arrest you i do not think but enough for a search.

Well if they want to mount a camera in my bathroom i let them, i got nothing to hide, and if they want to see me wank off in the shower i pity them...

But this should only be used to hunt criminals/terrorists, and there should be harsh laws against leaking the "info" to the media.

this goes completley against the principles of what a government should be.

it should be a slave to the people, the people should not be a slave to the government. once you fear the government its gone tits up, back to front, upside down and before you know it theyre shitting in your tea pot just to make sure youre getting enough vitamins everyday.

Another thought: when Police do execute a search warrant, there are no legal obligations to leave your house in any fit state as they found it, they can fuck the place up without any real issue. Bet that's nice, particularly for innocent people.

Even if you have done nothing wrong it would still piss you off turning your house over! :(

The police usually don't execute search warrants on "nice people" who have done nothing wrong because they need to prove that the search will find evidence etc..

Bit like how finnish police is making a presentation how they will take everyone's fingerprints when you need to get new passport.

OK it's not bad on itself, but what about when the system malfunctions? I have never seen a computer which is 100% correct all the time, will be fun going to jail because they used window's XP and it went BSOD just on the right moment.

I go get my tinfoil hat :(

Strange how everyone just seems to accept the steady erosion of civil liberties that has been taking place over the last twenty years.

Persoanlly i am dead against giving any governemt or private agency for that matter anymore powers then they had twenty years ago to deal with criminals or terrorists. They had /have plenty already.

If people think that for example having a national ID card wil stop one terrorist act all i have to say is that if they are smart enough to make a bomb you would think that an ID card wouldnt be a stretchh for them surely?

Lets not forget the ineptitude of goverments the world over in keeping private information on their citizens private

U.K. government loses data on driving-test candidates - CNET News.com

U.K. government loses pensioner data - CNET News.com

UK government loses data on 25 million Britons | 20 Nov 2007 | ComputerWeekly.com

a few good examples of how that private information can become not private - sorry that doesnt seem to be the best written English but its almosy 1am here and i am knackered after moving house today..

You cannot stop terrorists or criminals by taking away peoples privacy. It is bad enough that the moment you step out of your house, pretty much in any urban center, you are on cctv and that they can track your every movement using your CC's and mobiles.

Laws are supposed to make you feel more secure and safe rather then to cause you to fear buying plants, fridges or what you put out in your rubbish.

Had this happen to me many years ago in Croydon after i had a blazing row with a GF i used to live with, one of the nieghbours called the police. They broke the door down took us to seperate rooms and tried to make either of us ask them to arrest the other.

When this failed and we both asked them to leave they started to look for drugs in the premises as they found one ashtray that had a load of butts in it and some torn rizla - thankfully we had nothing in the house at the time.

They ripped the shit out of my flat for four hours, floor boards beds cupboards and then just upped and left. Was a lovely experience.
