Just a little warning, if anyone has an IBM Deskstar drive between 40gb to 120gb then I suggest you make a backup of your data asap. 2 of these drives have died on me in the last week, each in a different machine but with the exact same error. After doing some research I have found out that there is a common fault on 3 different Deskstar models that causes them die and become irreparable. IBM addressed the issue with a firmware upgrade but it seems to have been ineffective, now a class action lawsuit is being prepared as it seems IBM have known about this problem all along but failed to recall all the effected product.

Anyway, this is just a little heads up incase anyone is unfortunate enough (like myself) to own one or more of these shitty drives, backup while you can or you may end up with 100gb of lost and unrecoverable data like I did.

Well...

... mine flew around the living room and blew up when it hit the wall so I guess it is kind of like Emperor Palpatine's Deathstar in that regard. :p

Yup, then they sold off the hard drive business to Hitachi as they were facing that many complaints and warranty returns, now poor Hitachi are having to handle the whole mess.

if u still have warranty ( 2years afaik, date is on the drive) u just send it to Hitachi and get it replaced, i did it with mine and it was 1 year and 11 months old when it crashed. Cost me 10e to send it and a month later a dude from usp came with my new disk :D

I would be mightly pissed if I got hacked behind two firewalls (one is hardware) and a correctly configured operating system. Add ontop of that I run a full system scan with my anti-virus every 12 hours and do spyware sweeps on a daily basis as well. It would take a kickass hacker to get at my data and I don't think the real good hackers would be interested in lil old me ;) As for storing vital data on the drives, well I usually keep everything backed up but some stuff is just too big to be archived without spending silly amounts of money, so I take the risk like everyone else.

Yeah, I had 2x 60 gb IBM DeskStar IDE drives die on me within 2 weeks on 2 different systems sometime last year, both bought from same supplier at the same time. IBM/Hitatchi DeskStar drives are notoriously prone to dying horrible deaths, avoid at all costs, go the extra £4-5 and buy a Seagate.

Replaced the faulty drives with Maxtor drives but I am not overly impressed, they make alot more noise than all my other drives. I rate Seagate very highly these days and of course Western Digital make great performance drives.

Best drive I had (well still have it but not in use due to noise) is my Seagate SCSI disk, very reliable, very fast. :)

In my line of work I see dead Seagate SCSI drives all the time from servers and yet I rarely see a dead Seagate IDE drive from a desktop, WD drives (mainly OEM for Compaq) on the other hand seem to have a pretty high failure rate.

hmmm that explains alot... got myself an IBM-DTLA-307030, and on booting , half of the time it aint recognised and I have to reboot. It also makes a clicking noise.

was thinking "time to dust out the pc" but now i see it aint just me..

fucking IBM :wanker:, spent loads (back then) at that drive.

yeah but that is mainly because of the bad design of the the Compaq PC's.

I'm unemployed now for 3 years (*sob*) but back when I was a techy and worked alot with Compaq Evo and EN(S) workstations, they had the harddisks built in just above the CPU, with not enough cooling :twak:

Fried HD anyone?

Now im running WD disc's without problem... have been throwing away to many noisy Maxtor disc's at work to trust them even tho lots of people use them and are happy with them...
