Just been prescribed some of these babies(Propranolol Hydrochloride), now I know Will has taken beta blockers before but I was wondering what they are gonna do to me before I take any.

I don't know anyone in RL who has ever had any so a few comments would be nice.

USES OF BETA BLOCKERS

TREATMENT OF HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE

CONTROL OF ANGINA

TREATMENT OF CERTAIN ABNORMAL HEART RHTHMS

PROLONGING SURVIVAL OF PATIENTS WHO HAVE HAD A HEART ATTACK

TREATMENT OF HYPERTROPHIC CARDIOMYOPATHY

TREATMENT OF HEART FAILURE

TREATMENT OF VASOVAGAL FAINTING

TREATMENT OF MIGRAINES

TREATMENT OF ESSENTIAL TREMOR

PREVENTION OF BLEEDING FROM ESOPHAGEAL VARICES

PREVENTION OF STAGE FRIGHT

GLAUCOMA

----------------------------------------
WHAT THEY DO

This results is a slowing of the pulse and lower blood pressure. It makes it easier for the heart to work despite narrowed coronary arteries. These effects help control the symptoms of angina.

The most common side effects are weakness and drowsiness. These symptoms reslove promptly when the medication is withdrawn. In diabetics, beta blockers may mask the warning symptoms of low blood sugar.

They can relieve forms of stress.

Fear not matey I took them for a while and the only noticable side affect was slight asthma. Nothing major though.

Propranolol

Propranolol is also used to control symptoms such as rapid heart rate, sweating and tremor associated with anxiety or excess thyroid hormone (thyrotoxicosis).

So there ya go. Is this for stress or heart problems ?

Although I thought I was perfectly happy, its for stress I think, stress or getting worked up over nowt. I thought I was relatively calm but Samm says I aren't, and I get the feeling Lester doesn't think I am either.

I'm calm, just miserable...................I'm sure.

Well, you mentioned "night terrors", this is commonly known as an "anxiety attack" or "panic attack".

I used to get these when I was under severe stress a few years back, from having a new born baby and a wife with cancer, on top of which I was an anxiety driven person anyway, but I didn't think I was "under stress" either, I put it down to an allergy or something.

The next stage after "anxiety attacks" is depression, and after having a friend go through that I'd strongly suggest you approach the anxiety seriously, but don't get worked up about it (ha ha, no not funny Xane).

PM me if you want to discuss further.

I got anxiety attacks a few years ago. Lots of stress in my life at the time, same ol shit. However I didnt know they were panic attacks, I kept getting this pain in my chest, I thought I was having a heart attack. It got worse and worse, until one day I went to see me dad on a visit and said to him about it. He says Oh, thats a panic attack . Fuck off says me, Im Ill etc.
He explained how he'd had them once, and been to the doctors an all that, and nothing had been found wrong, and that it was in his head.
Well , the point is , as soon as I realised he was right, no more panic attacks.
However, we're all different and I suppose every situation is different, thats just how it was for me :)

I got given those for panic attacks associated with an inner ear infection and total loss of my sense of balance.

They make you feel very chilled out and unstressed...You don't really give a shit about anything while you are on them. But coming off them is a nightmare, I got pretty bad depression then. I think the mistake that the doctor made with me was to slowly reduce the dosage, rather than just cut them out.

They did the trick though.

Actually now I think of it I was a little fucked up while on them. They took away my sense of priorities and common sense :/

I remeber being in a club with my bird and told her I was going to stay at this other bird's house (she was a friend).

My gf was upset, she went home and I slept in the other lass's bed that night but nothing happened (i didnt feel that way about her tbh)

For the life of me I had no idea why I was acting like this but apparently I was a wierd bast when I was on them.

This is a classic symptom of an "anxiety attack", the scary part is when you realise the symptoms are totally imaginary, they are not real, no matter how it feels and no matter how convinced you are about it.

One thing I remember is getting always a sore throat during an attack, I'd take lozenges or syrup or whatever to no effect, but curiously the symptoms immediately dissapeared when the attack abated. There is no way a sore throat can clear up in such a short space of time, the reason was because there was no soreness, it was all in my mind, but it was so fucking real.

Some imaginary symptoms do actually result in real symptoms, the (imaginary) chest pains mean you start hyperventilating, you deprive yourself of oxygen and the chest muscles will start to tighten for real, in my case my chest felt like someone had been using it as a punchbag. The solution is to use the good old brown paper bag, you reintroduce carbon dioxide into the lungs and counter the tightening, it does work.

It's scary when you know you are going nuts :) But then again knowing is the first stage in recovery, next you have to accept it and then do something about it, but don't ignore it, you do not want to advance to later stages of a mental condition, believe me.

I was prescribed Seroxat (paroxetine), a Prozac derivative and in a class of drugs called SSRI, they really chill you out, the word "mellow" seems to describe the effect.

In my case I had to give them up after three weeks, after a few weeks I was so chilled out I kept sleeping, up to 12 hours a day ! I just could not work and take them although the doctor claimed eventually the sleep pattern would return to normal, I wasn't going to wait months for that to happen though.

One uncomfortable side effect of SSRIs is the inability to climax, which might be seen as a blessing or a curse, depending on your partner (or lack of) ;)

I work in IT in the Finance/Banking industry, the doctor told me probably half of them are on Prozac or similar anyway, it was reassuring to know that as a nutcase you are not alone.

The thing is xane, if you know its all in your head, for me there is no longer a problem. As soon as i said to myself, "ahh this isnt real" its gone, no more problem.
Ive made this point on here before, and its only my opinion, but as soon as you start taking drugs for something are you not makeing the problem worse ?

Depends throddy, you may have unconciously had a change in attitude that caused the trigger of the anxiety to go away.

I my case there was always going to be a baby around and my wife was not going to get cured overnight, it is a lot harder for some people to change circumstances or attitude and in most cases, despite the side effects, the drugs do work long term and help you get through the immediate crisis or help you challenge the issue that is causing the problem.

Sometimes you just need a break, just to get things together.

Im sure you're right Xane . In my case the things I was worrying about wern't going to go away either, but it wasnt life or death so at the end of the day it can be ignored.

Throd is right though.

Drugs are usually only 10% of the cure. Me mate's a shrink.

Most of these issues usually need some external human help. Some people don't need this though.

I was prescribed Propranol by the Doc for Depression. When I finally saw the shrink he took me straight off them. "Theydon't do shit" he told me.

Btw, don't try and play football on them. The stop your heart from beating to fast and thus you can't push yourselve too hard. I fell over to the sound of heavy laughing when I tried to play :)

I'm on 40 mils of these a day at the moment. They are bloody excellent. I feel the best I have in a long time and am getting a lot of things sorted. I start to reduce the medication at the end of next month. 10 mils a month off until I finish. We'll see how the world looks then.

My girlfriend at the time thought it was her fault. Till the shrink told me of this nice little side effect. I'm thinking of becoming a pr0n star now :)
