I think i got it right bar a few minor details hopefully someone will intervine and help me

ok goto mirc and tell it to use port 1024 to 1024
then just forward this port to your pc

this means that mirc will only use port 1024 for DCC.
is it really that hard to understand

I managed to muss up my box the other week, i accidently farked the permissions, so lots of commands wern't working, and when i tried to reboot(i'd allready bakced up game configs as i knew what i was gonna do), i found root didn't have permission to access anything in /dev, so couldn't do anything

As a friend put it `that's the most ssecure box ever, even root can't access it!'

I'm still not sure how what i did caused what it did, but it doesn't really matter, as i changed my partition scheme around before xmas so that i could reinstall/change distro without any fuss.

Yes it is... i've set mirc to use ports 1024-1028

but what to tell xp firewall?

to forward ports 1024, 1025, 1026, 1027, 1028 to your PC.
