I want to try and learn about this, i realise its not the easiest thing in the world, but do you know any good sites which would be a starting point?

I have a course thingy at work but it feels a little "too much too fast".

Was reading something about making my pc also have a virtual machine to setup an active directory environment.

sorry i cant explain more :(

Hmm, join the course at work and maybe bob down to your local library and see if there any books regarding it?

Or try e-bay, read a little bit each time before you knob the Hoff picture/sleep and you should be ok.

Im doing web design at college but learning a bit of programming on the side out of boredom, and the fact my college has a shitload of books about it

For the virtual machine side of it, go and grab VMWare Workstation or Virtual PC 2007, both free. WIll allow you to set up an OS of choice inside and you can certainly set up AD and play away :D

I went on this recently on a 5 day course with work and it was VERY easy. The company were QA-IQ in glasgow. Fantastic trainer but I'm glad I wasn't paying for it..

anyway most of the course was just a book which frankly was very easy to follow.

2274C - Managing a microsoft windows server 2003 environment

is enough to get you going if you don't need to install the server and just want to know about setting up AD and managing it. you might be able to buy the book on it's own.
