and JBP, you really suck. :/

(I actually have you on ignore because your posts are just dog jobby at the best of times, but I couldn't help notice Deebs' quote of your post).

Really no need for this at all.... everyone is entitled to their own opinion however no one is entitled to make personal jibes like this unless in pure jest which yours is not.

As for why I came here the debate on HD DVD / Blu Ray we will have both eventually maybe a multi player maybe a PS3 not sure yet, however for the moment we have the HD DVD which is good and I can not hear the noise either, so maybe I suck too eh?

Yoni sucks!

I don't find the 360 optical drive that bad actually. I find the actual unit and the fans unbearable for movies though. The PS3 is a lot better in regards to noise, but you're delusional if you say you can't hear it.

Hi Yoni, nice to see you out the woodwork.

Clown, I think the 360 gets a bit of a bad rep to do with actual playback. I've not seen it for myself, so I can't comment, but Whathifi Home & Cinema said something about that on screen "motion" isn't as good as it could be so it's generally not great.

Hi Yoni, nice to see you out the woodwork.

Just because I don't write here much it doesn't mean I don't read things.

As you have not experienced the XBOX playback personally it makes your comment to JBP even more unfounded... what a cockbadger.

You have issues.

The 360 is noisy, we all know it, I've heard it - I just can't vouch for the playback quality of HD content, but my advice to those is to check that before buying it as a dedicated HD device. My comment to JBP has nothing to do with this thread's discussion, but his attitude to which I'm entitled to comment on, thanks.

It's christmas, stop being cocks.

You are right clown, the ps3 isn't silent. But so little is these days. My V+ box's harddrive is noisier than my ps3, my pc is as well. I guess we are conditioned not to notice, but the 360 can take the piss at times :)

well for hd playback is hard to compare as not all films are authored the same way or available on both formats . all i got is serenity, transformers on hd dvd casino royale freebie and ratatouile on blu ray.

pop in a dvd, or decent encoded xvid/divx and ps3 edges it on scaling. tho there aome nifty .wmv rips floating about that look good playing on 360

xbmc still wh00ps ps3 and and x360 when scaling both xvids/divx and dvds tho

Whats it like for film playback? Is it stunning?

I desperately want a high def player but don't want to commit just yet, but I may be tempted if the PS3 is good.

Be nice as well Big G, JBP and Yoni are good guys, granted they aren't your sister (*fap*) but they are decent.

Bloody stroppy jocks  Speaking of which, where the fuck is my Leggy, I miss him :(

He is due for a return, probably around new year when he makes a new set of resolutions he will not stick to.

It's good for dvd playback Trem, the upscaling is just as good as a well setup PC and the majority of mid range dvd players. It is region-locked though. Blu-ray looks good.

Like I am sure I (told ya so! :p) said when you got your TV, get a ps3 rather than a upscaling dvd player.

The main problem is the price of the discs though Ch3t thats why I went with the Oppo instead (and boy is it sexy).

I will not pay the prices they are asking for next gen discs.

I forgot you bought the Oppo. Do not bother with the ps3 then, if the price of blu-ray is what is putting you off, then the ps3 will offer you nothing that the Oppo does not.

If however you find some places with reasonable blu-ray pricing, then the ps3 is a very capable blu-ray player, with the benefit of media features and games.

I dont see why HD-DVD is seen as inferior, i have a ps3 for bluu-ray and very first gen(not even 1080p) toshiba HD player and the HD films generally look much better. Far less noise and much better colours. Blue rays major advantage is the ammount of studios backing it tbh but all it would take is one or two to go HD aswell and that would even the playing field. Blue rays true saving grace is fact it comes free as part of the ps3 and now finally after a year the ps3 is starting to get some good games. My advice tho would be get the ps3 then save up games and trade them in and get HD-dvd drive for x360 aswell and have best of both worlds. Because its 100% guaranteed if u buy one format, films u would really really want will get released on the other, its sods law.

Film playback is stunning Trem, can't fault it. I've compared it with my dad's standalone player, and tbh, the PS3 is equally as good (infact I can't say one is better or worse) - but I'd say better because loading discs is a damn sight faster due to the hooj processing power of the PS3.

It also has completely replaced my media centre PC too; it has built in WiFi and with media sharing on WMP11 enabled on the PC, I can view my photos, videos (porn, TV shows :p), play my MP3's and play my WMP11 playlists seamlessly over the wireless network. The XMB is smooth and sexy.

Obviously it's now my DVD/CD player too - I love the way you plop in a disc and it fetches the album data from the web (i know this is old, but my HTPC didn't do that properly at times).

Imo, it's less of a "games console" and more of a multi media entertainment centre to me - it brings a wad of functionality into one box and when Play TV comes out shortly, it will replace my Freeview PVR box too. So that's an HTPC, a freeview box and a DVD player removed from my HIFI rack and all dealt with from the PS3.

All of this in 1080p goodness, you really need an HD device to really appreciate it. The menu systems are slick and polished, the DVD playback where you pause and bring up track information is lovely to look at too. I was worried it would be slow, clunky and not very intuitive. Plus, the PS3 is very quiet indeed.

Bargain at £300.

Yeah it's a twin freeview tuner, I wouldn't have expected it to be under £50 anyway - £80 for a twin tuner is a very good price. Sony's now discontinued Freeview box (single tuner) was about £100 when it was finally dropped. I think the equivalent Humax Freeview box is about £70.

Wait til it breaks, you may of thought 360's were bad. When a mate of mine bought one, after 2 weeks he was on his 3rd PS3 as the cd-drive's kept failing on each one, his 2nd one had only been used for a matter of hours.
