Best place for a PS3 / PS3 Bundle?

Nice n simple, most places have the PS3 40 GB (not interested in the 60 GB) for £299.99 with no game, Amazon have it for £269.99 with no game, but probably not far off £299.99 by the time you add delivery.

GAME are doing a £299.99 with a free game, but they not with Pro Evolution soccer (the free game i'd like).

However, a retailer called Bennetts Online have the 40 GB version with Pro Ev for £310 including VAT and delivery - seems a storming price, but has anyone seen it anywhere cheaper or for about the same? (never heard of Bennetts Online tbh)

We do it for £315 at work with fifa 08, or £335 with fifa08 and planet earth blu ray.

The avforums guys have been saying that the 40GB runs a lot quieter than the 60GB version so makes it ideal as an every day blu-ray player. I'm not fussed about the PS2 backwards compatibility, or the lack of USB ports either so it's ideal.

To be honest, if you want it just as a cheap HD machine, I'd buy a Toshiba HD-DVD player instead, there are simply more HD-DVD movies available.

As for PS3 noise, I've got a 60GB and its really quiet.

Nah i'm not for HD-DVD at all.

It will be a half between games and blu-ray playback, just doesn't make a lot of sense to get a seperate blu-ray player and a games console (been humming about a PS3 and xbox 30 for the past 6 months), so the PS3 is a brilliant allrounder.

The PlayTV plugin thing looks to be fantastic too, turns it into a freeview PVR.

For UK use, just had to get a cheap 3amp ketleplug as the PS3 is multivoltage.


Cost to my door with no customs was £320.

Yeah but what that actually means is Blu-Ray share 49%, HD share, 42% (based on studio market share), but the rumour is that Warners may pick one format in the new year (and according to El Reg HD is looking favourite), which would mean Blu-ray 35%.

Don't get me wrong, I think Blu-ray is probably the superior format, but since when has that ever mattered?

Even when Toshiba flooded the market with 100 dollar hd-dvd players they failed to beat Blu-ray in software sales, in fact, since Blu-ray became available week on week they have outsold HD-DVD.

I have a HD-DVD player but I don't buy for it, all my purchases are now Blu-ray and I buy at least 2 films a week as a minimum.

Excuse me? You mean the 1gb or 8gb rips of movies? No thanks considering that a properly encoded HD film is always much more than that. I bought into HD to experience lovely encoded content all the way through. Not to suffer artifacts.

When they increase bandwidth, storage space and release films on an account basis (so I can redownload if my hardware fails) then physical media is always going to be the preferred choice for the purists amongst us.

You'd think wouldn't you? But the installed base for both formats is still pretty low in absolute terms. when enough people go into their local HMV and they can't get their latest blockbuster on Blu-ray (which has happened to me twice in the last fortnight) and they start telling their friends and then everything changes. Ultimately the game will be won by the platform that provides the most content combined with the hardware at a trivial price (which is usually the £100/$100 mark), which is why some of the studios are being, shall we say, "suitably incentivised" (not bribed, no sir, no way) to plump for HD-DVD rather than letting the market decide. Also don't forget the Blu-ray software figures are distorted by PS3 retail bundles; the attach rate on a standalone player will be longer.

TBH, if Sony didn't own their own studio Blu-ray would already have won; being a content owner has bit Sony on the arse so many times in the hardware wars I wonder why they bother.

To be fair tho there are exclusives on both formats which does suck, personally I want The Bourne series but can't get them for at least another 8 months, ie when the incentives (cough 100 mill if you sleep with me) run out.

Seriously though I cannot understand why people cannot just sit around a room and flesh out ONE standard which suits all instead of this crap we the consumer have to battle through.

Let's just hope it is sorted sooner rather than later before anyone's collection grows too big.

See I just buy for both, I am considering a stand-alone hd-dvd player because the 360 is too noisy. Best of both worlds, and with more dual format players due to hit the market, I will not lose out.

tbh - sales of Blu-Ray and HD-DVD so far are irrelevant as they are fuck all still in real terms. Neither have really caught on yet.

The format war is still way open and Blu-Ray's alleged superiority is bollox as HD-DVD is perfectly capable of storing a 1080p movie.

It will come down to exclusives when HD tellies reach a crtical mass and people start to realise how to actually use them.

That and whether the PS3 actually becomes a real success.

We have started offering hd-dvd and blu-ray in our dvd charts at work. The majority of people ask what they are and why they cost more than the identical film on dvd. The buying public aren't ready for a change yet, and certainly not for the cost. So Wij is right, neither has caught on yet. Only the gadget freaks and geeks really care at the moment.

Deebs: It's not that loud, I suppose it depends on the version of 360 you have. The drive itself makes less noise than the 360 fans. But it is noticeable especially during talky movies, still a cheap introduction to hd-dvd and convenient for me as well.

the Hd DVD drive is not as noisey as the sodding dvd drive inside the 360 it self,
i am on my 3rd 360 annd all of em are noisy with diff dvd drives in em. just hope this ones dies and they give me a silent replacement with hdmi socket

Um, why the fuck should I turn my music up so loud the windows vibrate in order to hide the fact that the optical drives in the 360 are so fucking loud?

The fact is the drives are noisy, every 360 owner who has working hearing will back up that fact. I bought 1 film on HD-DVD and hated it during the silence scenes. Was awful. The 360 is flawed for watching movies unless you intend on bulging your windows or pissing off the neighbours.
