Gah. My old P4 540 will run like a dog. I've got vmware workstation installed tho so I guess I could give it a try.

It'd be nicer if I could run it in 'doze tho. Are Filezilla or War any good?

Filezilla is probably the best free ftp server and client for windows. (if you don't want things like AD users integration etc)
I tried several, but Filezilla server just gave me the best up/download speeds to my server.

i'm using filezilla, seems to give good speeds, and configuring it is dead easy. if you're setting it up to give the internet access to it though (i.e. forwarding ports to the server) i'd recommend setting up a dummy empty folder for anon users, with no upload permissions, and have a username and password needed to get at the real areas. found my ftp server gets a lot of random hits, so i just stuck an empty anon folder, and that stopped them trying anything with it.

FTP passwords are plain text. the only actually secure servers are the anonymous ones, or ones that employ something like SSL to encrypt the user stream.
