right I am thinking of trying one of these types of games, but dont know which one, or the costs involved as I understand they have a monthly payment type thing going on.

Is DAOC the same as NWN and Everquest. ?

Opinions please.

I have it one good authority that NWN is a good one to start with. I've not received my copy yet, so I couldn't say. You might noticed that I asked a similiar question, only mine's in the correct forum. :p

Sorry, I only use this forum, and have noticed a lot of DAOC topics and even a NWN on here.

Seeing as it was a question of opinions I did'nt think it would ben too out of place here :(

Oh Well (quickly puts flame retardent kangas on)

Heh. Yer okay, kid. ;) I think I'm in a similar situation to you and I'll let you know my learned thoughts once Play deliver my copy. Did I say Play? I'm sure I meant Game.

Nice to see you've got your account password again, too. :)

Oh yeah, that's true. It isn't. From what I understand, you build up a character in single-player with the intentions of then using it to kick some multiplayer arse. The multiplayer servers seem much like FPS ones. The world isn't persistent and practically anyone can host a game. There's mutterings that BW are getting a server ready.

NWN is not actually "massively multiplayer", I think there is a restriction of 64 players per server, there are no central servers other than one that GSPs or private individuals provide and thus no subscriptions.

Visit here for a complete list of MMORGs, popular ones are:

* Ultima Online
* Everquest
* Asherons Call
* Anarchy Online
* Dark Age of Camelot
* Lineage
* Jumpgate
* WWII Online

Upcoming ones are:

* Everquest II
* Asherons Call II
* EVE
* Bigworld
* Shadowbane

(not sure of the status of some of these as I haven't been following them for a while now)

:)

wait for star wars galaxies unless you're a fan of elves, runes, and cod pieces.

Or join WWII Online now, which might still have the codpieces but you get panzers instead of pixies. WWII Online differs from most MMORGs in that it uses an FPS element to play, your ability to aim weaponry comes from your own skill not avatar statistics, this is not a point-and-click game.

Star Wars Galaxies is going to be the one to look out for.

If your looking for the most tedious and boring MMORG then go for Dark Age of Camelot. Hack and Slash at its worst. Let's hope the events in this new patch will add some life to a lifeless game.

I'd agree that WW2 Online is good. I played it when It was free for a month and spent nearly an entire weekend in a Spitfire.

(Admittedly I had no clue as to where I was flying and so ended up shooting random buildings, hoping they contained Nazis)

I was writing a very long reply to this then stopped as i need to be up in 5 hours.

Anyway most important point is what are you wanting to play a MMO game for. If it is for the social aspects most then the hack'n'slash variety are the best for that, most notably Everquest or Dark Ages of Camelot (DAoC). Everquest has tons of content and is an all round polished product. DAoC is a great game that just lacks on the content front give it another 6 months and it will be there, although in another 6 months and then the next gen of games will be out.

If you want realism try WWII Online, great game that had a very bad release. Although is very realistic and a lot of your time will be spent getting to the combat zone or waiting for a lift to the combat.

If your after fun then choose what ever excites you, although at the moment I would stick to either Everquest, Dark Ages of Camelot, & WWII Online.

The future though looks very promising with potentially released this year -
Planetside (Tribes'ish with potentially 10,000 people)
Star Wars Galaxies (created by a few of the people behind Ultima Online so could be very very good)
ShadowBane (Beta reports are not good at all for this unfortunalty, is a PvP centered affair of the Hack'n'slash mold)
Asherons Call 2 (Looks amazing, could well be the next big Hack'n'slash)

Problem with most MMO games at the moment is that they all suffer from the level tred mill, only exceptions being WorldWarII Online & Ultima Online. Although Ultima is now really showing its age :(

All in all wait there are so many great games around the corner, might as well wait before you sink 6 months to 3 years of your life into one of these :)

You missed the two biggest awaited ones.

Neocron (it's not turn based combat like all MMORPGS - it uses real time combat (like CS) in a MMORPG environment)

Star Wars Galaxies - enough said

Control system: Fucked.

Graphics: Turd & buggy, plus the texturing is really really bad.

Sound: Nearly non-existant

And in case ya still don't believe meh:
