Best Midgard solo/melee class RvR?

Hello lads :)

I thinking of starting a new class to aid my realm in combat :)

I want to make a character which makes nice damage, is not stealther and with the right items doesnt die immediately :) And i want to have a chance against the merc :)

Was thinking of a 2 Handed Savage.. whats ur experience?

Hello Zake,

I have a ML10 RR6+ Skald myself which is a Troll and use 2 handed hammer. I have 25 str cap, 23 con cap and unlike other skalds capped everything else except for energy resist.

I only play in the weekends theese days due to work but I can say, that I have more than 500 solo kills on him, and beaten mercenaries with the right combination of RA's. In my oppinion they are the toughest opponent to meet, except for Kagato ;) (hi2u) and it is usually versus mercenaries I have the best fights.

Utility : 2x instant DD, instant snare, instant mezz, dam add chant, heal chant, speed chant, elemental chant, spirital chant, forceful zephyr, phase shift.

Realm Abilities (atm) : Ignore Pain 2, Anger of the Gods 2, Ameliorating Melodies 2, and Speed of Sound.

Nifty Shit : Battler debuff, Stealth Lore, Realm Lore, Mezz/Stun Immunity, Cure Ress. Illness, various morph modes, various charges + I always have around 500 end/heal/power elixirs in my backpack.

I should add that this is my third skald creation over time which I've played to RR6, have sold the others, but well well.. I missed to play the class since its loads of fun so I recreated one :) I think its a great class with lots of potential compared to others, and I bet if I created a savage I wouldnt be able to live without speed 5. Also, an advantage for skalds are chain armor which will benefit you a great deal.

Conclusion : You wont go wrong with skald, they cut through stealthers like warm butter. I uploaded a few screenshots so you can get an aproximate idea of how much damage a well equipped troll skald does. WITHOUT damage realm abilities.

Screenshots and templates are availible here. I dont always use my print screen button so I could probably have had alot more screenshots.

Damage wise I am specced 48 Hammer, 46 Battlesongs, 5 Parry. The standard spec is 46 Battlesongs, 44 Weapon and 17 Parry, but I chose the other one since I, with 406 STR and 48 Hammer, have just above 1800 Weapon Skill which means more damage (yes 1800 is alot for a light tank) So... you will have your base weapon damage depending on specialization, realm abilities and realm rank, and you have AOTG 2 which gives roughly 100 extra damage, the skald dam add chant which gives roughly 40 extra damage, and the shaman dam add which gives an additional 20 extra damage. Furthermore skalds get yet another damage add as a Champion Level ability in the upcoming expansion Darkness Rising. Wopidoo more damage :)

In my oppinion skalds are definently one of the better solo/melee classes in midgard though some people underestimate them, but each person his oppinion :)

i would have to agree with limitless alto my skald aint really fully lvled yet and so on i still feel that when it is i will have a great time (and so would you i think)

a little side not (limitless any chance i could see your template :) i cant get a grip on how to make my own (abit to found of arti charges and stuff :D

a few nice skald ones are:

som, malice 2h, battler 1h, gov, golm, cb, croc ring, scalars, phoebus, winged helm, eireenes, harpies and probly a few more :)

Got 2h svg...his achilles heel is shield users. (check link below though) ;)

Think I would pick my zerker solo. Just need good gear and abuse arty charges, af charges, haste & buffs. (mercs surely will give challenge...DT is teh hard ability)

Toa´ing armsman atm...gonna see how can do with it when rdy...

Skalds are still probably the most fun visual class for being able to group and solo and give good fights, and if they know what they are doing some can take me pretty close or win if all my timers are down, depending on luck. And escaping is easy if you meet a fight you don't want.

Personally though i'd love to see more Valkyries about, I really don't understand why they are not more popular for groups and solo. With high odin spec they would be a nightmare for any spellcasters, and i'd love to fight more. If I had more time i'd play one myself just to show it can be done. :(

Nah, you dont need it :) various people say you need phoebus harp aswell which has prooven to be pure shit, versus enemies aswell. It is definently not a must. I've done just fine so far, without it. Might add that I've had the exact same template you have and it is a nice template indeed, but I would just prefer more spirit than energy, and so on :p

IP2 + FZ + AOTG2 + Battler debuff = unbeatable.

My template dosent have SoM true, but this is something I chose myself. My template has more con cap than any other skald templates I've seen, and I would pick that before SoM any day :p

I agree Kagato, though I'm not well known with valkyries potential, there isnt many of them around. I've never played one so cant say how good they are :D

actually i think aotg dont worths if you are soloing , i would prefer mop and aug str instead of aotg :)

you template very good indeed , but in skald 1 con is not really much hp , you can make 10 meleespd instead of it , will be more useful i guess.

mate, som absorb is important :p you can beat tough enemys when ur ip or fz down.

for rr6 i will take purge 3 , mop 3 , sos1 , aug str 2 and 1 point left , for solo.

I went down a slightly diferent path for my template, opting for the more defensive set-up. I included SoM, PH, Croc Ring and TG Vest. I still get nice hits and con with near str nearly capped. My spirit is slightly low but i use my chants to bring them up when needed, also i got some parry (44/46/17 spec) and seem to parry alot considering my low dex. Where i lack is melee damage and 5% style damage but i figure the defence is better, since i can only hit one target at a time but can defend against more and i meet more duo's (fz + mezz ftw) than solo'ers.

Nice stuff: Battler use2, Cyclops shield Stealth lore (great for those /wavers :D, Malice, Croc Ring damage reduction/conversion, Heal Proc on TG Vest, SoM, PH, Phase Shift & FZ.

My RA's atm are IP1, Purge 1, SoS, MoP2, going for IP2 and Purge 2 for rr5.

If he's gonna go solo in RvR Ameliorating Melodies 2 is rather a waist imho. I had DI2 on my heretic but never found groups so I went PD 4 instead and I'm loving it solo :)

I tested abit with style dmg vs Ph and as far as i can see it dosen't in anyway reduce 75% of the style dmg on my shammy, i use zerker to test. ofc its not totally accurate due to swing never doing same dmg.
Still takes some dmg done from styles away but not 75% the way i see it.

Tested it 3 times on my shaman together with Meril and it did reduce around 75% of the style dmg.

I do both grouping and soloing or else it would be pointless to have both IP2 and AM2 :p

Well, Push I've played atleast 3 million rps without SoM so it must be a personal oppinion, in my oppinion its not that good :) several enemies who claim to be tough wait till they meet me to use their phoebus and theyve still been beaten so it cant be that great :O

Anger of the Gods 2 actually give 100 more damage for 30 seconds so the enemies usually get a bit surprised if you use it, and in a tank group (as I do both) it is very nice aswell ;) if its worth it or not, I dont know but its certainly nice to have.

:) well that wasen't what i saw anyway it does reduce some and i like having both that and winged on shammy:)

I played for about 5 mill without it(ok, lots of it was before ToA:p) and did just fine. Didn't think it was that good.
In my new template i put it in and i will never make another template without it again.
SoM users were never a problem for my 2-handed skald, but when i began to solo on my zerker, i noticed how annoying it could be.
As a soloer, you'll run into plenty of dualwielders and SoM is great against those.
With Battler charge, Warguard or both, you wont take a lot of damage and with a few SoM procs as well, you wont take much at all.

I kept my Phoebus since i like it. It's only 5 min, but it's nice to have when SoM is down.
It takes off 4-500 from PAs and can easily absorb 200+ from 2-handed hits from armsmen.
Casters aren't usually a problem solo and Phoebus or SoM will help you live longer against other meleers than a few more con cap will.

skalds are normally very soft for a champ, but som/harp makes them a lot harder :p
