Best Linux OS To download

Slackware would be best OS to learn stuff tbh or Gentoo. The documentation in Gentoo is probably the most detailed for any Linux dist out there.

Sooo annoying to get linux to work ;<

My experience:

Ok i got my data, my games, my files my music my vids on my 2nd partition. Now i wanna install linux! ok! lets partition my already partitioned harddisk so linux can use my old systems drive.. Hmm install fine! woo. Now i wanna access my old harddrive with my stuff on.. hmm ntfs you say ;/ thats read only ;/ Well at least i can play the odd linux game.. uhoh ;/ need drivers >_< tell me why do i have to edit the xorg.conf (or what ever) file just to have a chance to get it to work? Well never got it to work.. couldnt even change refreshrate on the screen, not via the GUI interface for setting that stuff up, or even via that xorg file.. hmm.. well then i wanna try to access some windows shares so i at least can listen to some music! Samba you say? QQ suuuuch a big hazzle when youre used to just plug you net in and have instant access to the shares... why all that setting up? Well now i can at least grab some files! Oh.. i cant stream em over the network? ic... gotta copy em down first.. ok.. lets try that.. Hmm not mp3 codec? and whats this? i need 20 other packages to be able to just install a decoder? hmm think i'll give up and go back to windows

At least thats my experience from Red Hat version hmm 10 maybe..

But my school seem to be running Fedora pretty nicely tho

Try accessing ext3 or Reiser on windows

Well at least i can play the odd linux game.. uhoh ;/ need drivers >_<

This differentiates per distro. RedHat isn't the easiest to set up. It's not made with that in mind.

Partly that's because of safety, but indeed, could have been a bit more user-friendly

You picked the wrong distro if you wanted an easy one to set up.

They wrote apt and similar programs for that.

Re dhat isnt really for home users with no prior knowledge of windows
you would be better with Fedora or ubuntu if you wanted a easy (mostly wizard guided) linux os

suse is my personal current favourite, nice and easy to install and just works. and it's also microsofts new favourite alternative os which is always a good thing

Actually i also tried Suse with about the same results

And about the gfx drivers, they seem quite more difficult to get to work than on windows (installed the driver following the nvidia instructions but still couldnt play the different 3d games :>)

SuSe Linux (now working with Novell) is one of the most clear Linux distributions you could ever get. It's very easy to set up, still has everything you need on 5-7discs or 1 DVD. I think you can download it aswell.

Ubuntu is really cool cause you can set up your system from the net, customize your settings and then compile an optimized kernel for your machine, which means that x64 and dual core will show their full advantage.
