Best Job

In regards to work who would say that they are satisfied with the company they work for ?

Not just the pay deal and holidays. More with the way they are treated as a human being. I read an article this weekend that more and more people would consider dropping the fringe benefits (Company Car etc.) to work less hours or have more quality time at home. The article went onto say that it wasnt just for being workshy or lazy, more to do with the actual quality life.

I suppose my question is does the company/job affect your quality of life and is it worth it ?

Despite spending 5 years at uni doing an engineering degree and leaving to be a research scientist I am really not career oriented.

I personally dislike my job and the people I work for. I would seriously take a big pay cut for a job that I am happy with that is miles away from where I am now. Money has never been a motivational factor and I dont want to wake up in 40 years having dedicated my whole life solely to my career.

I was given the option, many years ago, of giving up my office and working from home.

I accepted quicker than a very quick thing.

I don't get lonely as I still have to be out and about visiting clients and fellow workers, and a big bonus is I don't have the 130 mile round trip to the office anymore.

I would have taken a pay cut to do this, but I actually got a nice liitle rise for doing it

I don't get involved in office politics either which is nice.

That is the worst; Office politics.

Our team and another team are now managed by the same boss but we do different jobs. One of the guys off the other team sent an email to the lot of us asking if we would all like to go out for a curry in a few weeks. His own team mates have started kicking off saying we are not the same team, he shouldnt have done it and they are now ignoring him. Pretty commical to watch because it is so petty

Well... 'My Lads' (the 7 guys I have working in my team) like to have a good old moan.

Fortunately I get them to do it at our monthly 'Greasy Spoon Cafe' meeting, so they're not always on the phone.

Company car moans are the worst. I seem to spend more time listening to whines about them than anything else.

I'm happy where i work, my team is small and everyone is a bit of a character which is a nice mix. The perks and bonuses that come with the job are great.

The company is relatively small but is expanding fast and gaining a large share of the market and will hopefully carry my career with it.

There are some office politics, but i'm afraid it's the same everywhere. I stay out of it.

I finish work at 4pm, but sometimes get away earlier. I can work flexi, as long as I do 35 hours a week: great for "fuck it, lets take a half day", providing no work/project is impacted.

Fabby :)

Granted every one has a moan and in the main they are pretty much entitled to it. Does it affect your quality of life at home though ?

Not at all.

I have a very good team, all very compatible.

There have been some times when something's happened which has caused me to not sleep as well as I should, but thankfully they are few and far between.

If my work started affecting my home life I'd be out the door like a shot.

Work is there to fund my lifestyle, not become my lifestyle

And now for someone who doesn't work in an office.

I hate my job, at the moment I'm doing 50 hours a week and will be doing for the next month, 6 days a week, day off on fridays. My hours are sporadic at best, tomorrow I'm working from 2pm until 11.30pm then on tuesday I'm working from 9am until 4pm etc so planning social activities is almost impossible. No official breaks and no perks other than free coffee or tea which tastes like shite. I spend 2 hours a day getting there and back and don't recieve anything for my fuel costs and to top it all off my bosses are ignorant gits (I nearly said that banned word) and treat people like crap. I'd leave tommorrow if I didn't have my loan to pay off.

I currently work 4 weeks offshore then have 4 weeks off and it's only lately that things are starting to piss me off. Part of the problem is the way our local management are pushing our succession plan, basically it's a case of oooh get rid of ex-pats as fast as possible.

Unfortunately the local staff that are taking our positions aren't happy about this either since they don't feel they are getting the right quality of training, which is true. This has made everybody on the platform pissed off and people are quitting left, right and center.

Our little problems haven't yet affected my off time but as soon as it does I'll probably leave as well.

Well... I've been working in customer services and for the last couple of years in business customer relationship management and I am slowly getting somewhat sick of it. *sighs*

Maybe because I am a somewhat grumpy bastard.

My job sucks. I wish I actually was a vicar, rather than working in customer services. Every now and then I get given something technical to do, I'm happy for a while. Then the powers that be realise that I'm enjoying myself, and slap me back down, making it quite clear I'll not get promoted.

But I lack any formal qualifications to get any jobs I actually want (and could easily do). Bah etc.

I took a big pay cut to move from my last place in the City to my current place which is 10 mins away from my home last April.

I wasn't under any pressure to leave my last job. The company was up for sale but I would not have been made redundant.

I left because I was getting no where fast. I was in a section with dysfunction and all we were both doing all day was surfing because the company couldn't get its arse into gear regarding the takeover etc.

No matter. I'm enjoying my current job. I am currently getting new people into my team (contractors are out) and my boss is nice.

That's exactly the problem... I have a major in psychology but due to having worked in CRM for several years now, it's hard to find anything else once you are "set".

On the other hand - it's really easy to find a well paid job once you have alot of experience and good job reports from former employers.

Still. It sucks. ;)

And now I'm doing the job of 3 people and still have time to surf the net all day! :) :( And I will probably be getting a pay rise as well!

I'm not that unhappy here but I want to move out and I will do so when I find a job I want....I do have an interview this wednesday which I dont think I'm all that suitable for but a bit of interview practice never hurts.

I should also be doing some studying but the motivation is very low.

Strange, took me a few years to realise I needed a job I enjoyed otherwise I'd just up and quit at some point. I like retail, but hell I ain't standing on a shop floor selling computer games when I'm 60!

So I'm off looking elsewhere, trouble is everyone, and I mean EVERYONE from my parents' generation seems to think a job is done whether you like it or not, it's just supposed to pay the bills so you can bring up the kids, and you're not supposed to look for something that is fun, but something that is reliable.

Well they can stfu. :D

I am actually considering starting my own business in Yankeestan (well, once I've paid bills and stuff for awhile to get a good credit...). It's incredibly easy there to get loans to start a business.

Me still ponders over it. I mean - heck, it's a lot of work yet so rewarding if you are actually successful with something you can put your heart in.

atm I'm happy with my work. what I'm not happy with is the fact that my current manager seems to be doing his damnedest to keep me in place at a certain level and pulling just about every low trick there is to "manage" that.

still, every now and then I have thoughts about working for an entity that seems more worthwhile; perhaps IT in a hospital or youth-related thingy.

I've had to put my nurse training on hold :(, and a hate working full stop now. Its boring. Offices are dull, and full of people who think its fun to make your life hard and to create trouble to make themselves look better. Oh, and women can be VERY bitchy to other women at work (suppose they see others as 'competition') - but I guess we all knew that!

Bring back the stinky wards and old dears who want escorting to the loo every 5 minutes.....

I believe some people who have the 'fortune' to be present on the IRC channels I frequent will know I am not to happy about where I work :)

To be honest what has come as a total shock is that I actually want someone to talk to! Right now I sit opposite someone who says no more than 10words a day I am out of the 'loop' and don't know whats going on around the office and it annoys me.

I'm getting paid more than I was getting paid at my last job but I would quiet happily go back there, if they still existed :(

I have thought about getting out of IT and doing something else....

I'm one of those people who like to work in the same place day in day out with an office full of familiar friends/enemies, I also won't work stupid hours, I don't mind the occasional problem that I have to stay behind for but I won't work after 5pm doing stuff that is not urgent

I worked for an OK company for two years. Nothing really bad about them but quite a few things i didnt like.
I think the only good thing working there was the amount of time i got to just do what i wanted. It was in IT job and i learned a ton of stuff from all the free time i got.
But as of last week im now unemployed and in a month will be setting off to travel round the world.

When i get back i almost certainly wont be working in IT.

I wouldn't mind seperating my job from my hobby. Sitting in front of a computer ALL day is a little dull.

RSPCA Inspector eh? Sounds pretty cool. Good luck!

Ideal job for me would be working for myself. Not because I am unsociable type of person far from it. I am getting a few things in place to achieve that in the next year. I suppose its becuase I am just fed up of being treated like a number in my current job. No chance of promotion so no upward movement. Wages are around 20% higher than similar jobs in other companies. So in one respect it is frustrating:(

By the same token it is satisfying to know it wont be long before I am doing something I want to do and really enjoy. Plus it will improve my quality of life.

I've got a cousin who is a landscape gardener, he's mental yet seems to be almost permanently stoned.

Hmm, I've just started to wonder exactly what he grows...
