My vote goes to Sisters of Mercy (I'm prolly the only person who still listens to their stuff LOL!)

For some people at my school (many moons ago) it was compulsory to wear black, listen to the cure and look like you might slit your wrists at any minute.

i'm not and never really have been interested in this particular genre. the cure are, however, one of my favourite bands of all time. disintegration is easily one of my top 10 most-spun lps, so much so i need a new copy i think =[

Personally one of the few bands from my goth days i still listen to is Children on Stun or the Horatii, although depending on the era i'd personally say my favourites were (from the stuff they used to play at goth clubs before VNV singlehandly tried to kill the music scene)

goth music is like classical music but with lyrics, ie no guitars drums, and maybe some keyboard work... imo anyway
also, i would assume many songs are composed in a 'minor' scale... cause they sound a little rustic and gloomy

anything else is probably some kind of emo music type

and the only band i know who may sound like a goth band would be dragon land(medieval tunes, though performed with current instruments, think the majority of there stuff is in major, and its far from sinister lyrics) but still a rather good band imo, i think there dutch as well

Sisters of Mercy are great, so are the Cure.
Other good goth-ish bands: Nine inch nails, the early Depeche Mode (ok, they´re not exactly goth, more wave), but the winner in my books is ANNE CLARK!

Sisters of mercy were(are?) good, Bauhaus were easily the best goth band for me though.
