what new releases have impressed you and taken you by surprise? which have been total disappointments?

for me the best albums of the year would have to be...

the arcade fire - funeral
the rakes - capture/release
the wedding present - take fountain

however, big disappointments also came in the shape of...

roots manuva - awfully deep (poor, poor, poor)
editors - the back room (simply doesn't live up to the singles)
nine inch nails - with teeth (utter shite)
the ordinary boys - brassbound (what?)

i'd also like to say that kaiser chiefs - employment is overhyped, bloc party - silent alarm left out one of their best tunes and hard-fi have only got two good songs.

Bought a lot of good albums this year amongst them

The Rakes - Capture/Release
Pendulum - Hold Your Colour (THE album of 2005 for me.)
Shy FX - Diary of a Digital Soundboy
Calyx - No Turning Back
Metalheadz - Winter of Content (as ever, I'm bloody having compilations).
Leftfield - A Final Hit
Freestylers - Raw as Fuck
DJ Format - If you can't join them.....beat them
Doves - Some Cities (can't remember when this was released, think it was early this year.
Wipeout Pure Soundtrack

Thats all i can think of. Dissapointments.....

Foo Fighters - In Your Honour. Turgid boring middle of the road shite.
Audio Bullys - Generation. Not as good as their first one. Awesome lead single tho.
Kaiser Chiefs Hard Fi and the Gorillaz only have a couple of really good songs each, the Arctic Monkeys wouldn't know a tune if it sucked their cock and the Strokes new song is shit. Think thats the bad bits covered. why can't their be more bands like Pendulum?

wasn't 'a final hit' the tune leftfield did for trainspotting?

thought dj format's latest offering was below par in comparison to music for the mature b-boy...

My obvious answer is:

Sufjan Stevens - Illinoise

Big hits:

Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger
Queens of the Stone Age - Lullabies to Paralyze
I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning - Bright Eyes
System of a Down - Mezmerize

And finally (after missing out a few):

Sleater-Kinney - The Woods

Those which I haven't had a chance to listen to properly yet:

Antony and the Johnsons
LCD Soundsystem
Vashti Bunyan

I'd be jealous if the Strokes weren't shit.

And no mank, A Final Hit was Leftfield's Greatest Hits album they brought out. It's awesome.

My favourite album this year was Nine Black Alps - Everything is
Also liked The Cribs - The New Fellas

If greatist hits albums can count then obviously The Prodigy will be up there, and kudos to them for putting the 'good' version of Your Love on the remix cd, and the Fairground mix of Everybody in the Place on the singles cd.

Very quickly:

* Bloc Party - Silent Alarm was very good for most of the year, though I may've got a bit tired of it more recently.
* Doves - Some Cities. Wonderful album.
* Elbow - Leaders of the Free World. Like that a lot.
* Gorillaz - Demon Days. I honestly didn't expect to think very much of this, and I'm still suprised that it's on my list but somehow I've got really into it, shan't complain.

It's traditional to pick a fifth, but I can't. There are some albums with great songs on them, but I wouldn't pick them out as albums of the year. Super Furry Animals "Love Kraft" has Zoom! and Cabin Fever, both of which are great but the album as a whole isn't so hot.

Queens of the Stoneage - Lullabies To Paralyze came out in mars and stayed in my mp3 player all year, an amazing accomplishment
Opeth - Ghost Reveries, never let down, probably never will
Between The Buried and Me - Alaska, the band is growing up nicely, still work to do though
Burst - Origo Spagetti Western blends really well with post-hardcore
Dark Tranquillity - Character Uniquest band of the gothenburg scene, still going strong

And the letdowns:

Exodus - Shovel Head Kill Machine Zzz, just zzz
Darkest Hour - Undoing Ruin Devin Townsend screwed up
Naglfar - Pariah All traces of the black/death combo that made em unique is gone, and now they are just playing the dull watered down crap that everyone else plays
Novembers Doom - Pale Haunt Departures Meh, nothing special, too high hopes for it
Sentenced - The Funeral Album They somehow dropped the catchiness somewhere leading to it being just another band of depressed finns
Soilwork - Stabbing The Drama Less faggy melodies, more thrashy guitarwank
Thyrfing - Farsotstider Ah well, guess they had to turn on me someday

The Crown calling it quits :(
Nasum disbanding due to Miezkos death :(

Best:

Final Fantasy - Has a Good Home
The Evens - The Evens
Hold Steady - Seperation Sunday (possibly the most fun record of the year, it's awesome)
Six Organs of Admittance - School of the Flower
Broken Social Scene - ST
Sufjan Stevens - Illinoise
Antony & The Johnsons - I am a Bird now
The National - Alligator
Silver Jews - Tanglewood Numbers
Smog - A River aint too much to love
Half Man Half Biscuit - Acthung Bono

I also enjoyed: Duke Spirit, Iron & Wine, Stuart Staples, Isolee, Art Brut, British Sea Power, The Fall, Sleater Kinney, Broadcast, Lightning Bolt, Four Tet (Smile Around the Face being one of my favourite songs of 2005!), Part Chimp, Jamie Lidell, Love Is All

Architecture in Helsinki didn't reallly inspire me past a couple of songs, too saccharine, same with Boy Least Likely too.

Havent even heard the new Deerhoof!

The following albums were not dissapointing because I knew they'd be shit: Silent Alarm.

I thought that DJ Format album was alright, it kind of tales off toward the end though.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah was kinda dissapointing, in that several songs on it are AMAZING, but there are quite a few duffers too.

Songs of 2005

Kanye West - Gold Digger
Hold Steady - Hood Rat Friend
CocoRosie - Beautiful Boyz
Antony & The Johnsons - Fistful of Love
Girls Aloud - Biology
Gorillaz - Dirty Harry
The Research - C'mon Chameleon
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Skin of My Yellow Country teeth
Four Tet - Smile around the face
Prefuse 73 - Hideyaface
The Rifles - Peace and Quiet (this band will be big in 2006)
Sigur ros - glosoli

that'll do

Girls Aloud - Biology

ROFL is that based on the expertly written lyrics or the video?

It's a great song! It sounds fantastic and doesn't seem to have any pretenses at all.

I won't deny Girls Aloud are hot, they are absolutely amazing in that respect. Did anyone see Girls Aloud Christmas Special? Pheew.

I think, having had a look at a few other peoples lists and getting what I hadn't heard last year...I now suspect I would of added:

Edan - beauty & the beat. in terms of hip hop absolutely pisses on the DJ Format album, pisses on its lots, repeatedly. 'making planets' is phenomonal.

and

Animal Collective - Feels

Amazing!
