Benchmarking?

When I first joined here (BW *sob*) there was constant threads about peoples PC's and the bench mark scores they would get on 3DMark, people were obsessed and quite often Teedbacon got the highest score (by using photoshop and cheating I imagine ).

Has this side of PC's and games gone now, have all the gfx cards and CPU's reached a plateau now or can the games made not be made graphically fancy enough to stop PC's running them?

Very rarely do I hear about a game running shit or not being able to run on a PC, thankfully.

Personally Trem, I think that we're all a bit older now and couldn't care less about 3dmark scores. I used to have an ePenis and me and my mates would go to strange lengths to try and out do each other's scores.

Damn I want an old school games night with some Freddies.

It used to be important to know whether games would run on your system, but modern CPUs and GPUs are so goddamn powerful even an old machine will run the latest games at full whack or near enough.

I think the game designers are also being more careful - with the 'midrange' systems out there they can still put together a game that looks great and don't therefore alienate any potential buyers with a hw requirements list that looks like something in an ocuk forum mods sig...

Totally anecdotal evidence but I get the impression that software optimisation is coming a long way. Recent drivers for my 8800 ultra seem to have really improved performance.
