3d mark do a new one for each year to utilise the most recent things, the scores arent comperable between versions :)

the freebee version will bench a bit but you need to shell out for the full version for the bells and whistles

In all honesty, 3DMark is not really much more use than "oooh look, prettys" - and it's certainly not pretty any more by todays standards.

Strangely, you get a better all round performance benchmark result by running Quake 4 in timedemo - as old as that little trick is, it's far more indicitive of a gaming systems performance than anything Futuremark are ever likely to knock up.

while thats true, i would argue that benchmarking itself is spurious

does it run the games you want to play, with the settings you want on ?
then its fine
getting some abstract number for epeen purposes and comparing with other people is pointless :)

wasn't it 3d mark that admitted to giving a higher score to nvidia cards over ati? hmmm, I've always been a bit off the idea of running it since, as I ran a similar specced machine to a friend, only I had an ati card and he had a nvidia and was getting thousands ahead of me :(

check places like Overclockers for the cards and cpu's that score high on the fps tests, usually a good check.
