One of these has 'come into my possession'. I'm not interested in the battery backup thingy, but I am interested in the anti-surge features.

Is it as simple as just plugging it into the mains, and plugging my computer into the anti-surge outlet?

Can the UPS features be disabled, I don't want it plugged in all the time if its going to be consuming 50 watts or more.

Surely you could just get a power strip with a surge protector instead of using a UPS? Seems a bit over the top if you don't want a UPS.

Well a surge protector would cost me money. This did not :)

In theory you should just be able to disconnect the battery. Having glanced at the link you'll just have to put up with a flashing LED all the time but duct tape can sort that one out.
