Belkin N1 problem

I've just brought my wireless router back from work and tried to set it up at home with very limited success.

The first problem was remembering the login password. I blatantly couldn't remember it so I thought it would be clever to reset to the factory default settings and start over.

The problem is: whatever I change in any of the sections in the router config, when I click "apply changes" it spews out some rubbish about "ap0 no private ioctls" and "segmentation fault". It's done it so far when I try to change the admin password and when I try to enable security. Then when I return to these sections they haven't changed at all.

I've updated the firmware from 2.01.13 to 2.01.19 and the only difference I can see is the ability to choose the interface language on the home screen. The above problem still remains. :\

Any help appreciated, the belkin site doesn't seem to be that helpful and googling hasn't helped me massively. :(

Edit:

That's what it looks like after I click "apply changes".

I've noticed on the home screen it says security is enabled but the little led indicator on the router itself is off, suggesting that it's not enabled at all... :(

I can tell you what I think the error messages mean, but not how to fix them. :(

The "ap0 no privte ioctls" error is a message from 'iwpriv' (an open-source linux wireless toolset from here).

It is used to configure driver settings (in this case, the ESSID), and does this by issuing IO control (ioctl) commands to the driver. The ap0 bit is the name of the wireless device driver, which for some reason is claiming not to support the ioctls that iwpriv needs. Without these ioctl interfaces, the command fails, resulting in it throwing a segmentation fault (an all-purpose "*NIX has thrown toys from pram" error - usually a NULL pointer).

It'll probably do this every time you try to change any of the wireless configuration.

All in all, sounds like a very unhappy router. At a guess, something is wrong/incompatible with the firmware upgrade. Assuming you've done all the 'factory reset' things, I'd suggest (if you can) downgrading it back to the older firmware version.

Sorry I can't be more help.

Thank you anattic, those are the cleverest words anyone has said about the problem all day. In fact, they're one of only 3 bunches of words.

Someone said "ooh, segmentation fault, that's not good at all". This is the least clever bunch of words.

Belkin got back to me and suggested that holding the reset button down for 10 seconds wasn't enough to restore the factory defaults, despite what the manual said (push and release straight away to reset the router and press and hold for 10 seconds to restore defaults). They said hold it down for 30 and follow a VERY strict order about when to plug cables in and turn devices on.

I'll try this when I get home as I was looking around earlier and couldn't find any way of reverting to a previous firmware version. I noticed after I did the factory reset that the firmware version was still at 2.01.19. :(
