Were you spied on, allegedly anonymously??

The company has studied the movements of shoppers in a UK shopping centre to determine the paths that shoppers take and how long they spend in the centre as a whole.

Hmmm. Did they ask if this was OK?

They found that for an increase of 1% of time spent, shoppers spend 1.3% more on purchases

If they're collecting anonymous data how can they tell how much individual shoppers spent on purchases relative to time spent in a shop?

There are laws against this sort of thing, y'know :(

They are not exactly spying on you exactly. its more of a "GPS" location signal emitted by your mobile phone that they are picking up. (which will be in a spy film very soon I'm sure!)

Its marketing research...to determine the best ways for store layouts, positioning of products etc to get you to buy more....

Dont think they have to ask your permission as its a freely available signal...

They know how much a person spent by the time records. ie the time you were at the till and the time stamp on the till receipt.

edit: I like the use of it to find mobile phones in a prison...

If you don't want to be tracked, even anonymously, don't carry a mobile phone. Period. To be honest this is nothing more than a slightly more sophisticated version of the Footfall data already polled, and you're on camera the entire time you're in a store anyway, which is potentially far more dangerous (I've often wondered if the security cameras record me entering my PIN and how easy would be for a dodgy security guard to use that).

It will be featured in the new Will Smith film coming out soon.

i guess it would be more of a correlational study that "bob stood still for 30 seconds and spent 500 but when he stood still for 1 minute he spent £510.

there was talk a few years ago to use text messages to advertise certain shops

eg,

person with mobile goes into a cell site with a mcdonalds near it, they get a text saying "half price big mac" when they scan the barcode image thats in the text at the till.

We tested it in a shopping mall (Bluewater I seem to remember). As you might imagine, customers hated it...

Strange that eh? ;)

Well it was about 7 years ago, and it was opt-in, and they were being offered discount vouchers. In an email people eat that kind of thing up (still), but it hadn't really been done by phone before. People regard their phone inbox as more personal than their email. Who knew?

Seriously. Given two seconds thought I'd have figured that one out. It's kinda obvious :)

It is now. it wasn't as clear cut then. Don't forget there's a whole demographic that loves having wanky ringtones and wallpapers sent to them, and as I said, they did opt-in.
