Be Kind To Newbie Day

The one thing I see stopping this game becomming incredibly popular is the fact that despite its recent UK release there is already a vast difference in talent... This is obviously down to people having the game for months before its UK release...

I started two months ago, and even then there were people who'd been playing for a number of months previous... My point is that its very intimidating to join a server for a game you feel is new to find people there who could play the game professionally...

What I feel we need are a few newbie servers scattered around the place... There doesn't seem to be anywhere within decent ping range that is offering this facility and I feel it needs one of the big UK games services to provide it...

In the mean time I think those of us who do know what we're doing are just going to have to accept being team killed and asked how to lay a turret etc because at the end of the day the more people playing it the better...

I don't want all this to sound patronising (it probably does) but the Tribes community wont grow if newbies are mortared out of the servers by a few of us who've been playing it for too many hours to remember...

Newbie servers needed please!!!

COULD NOT AGREE MORE VELVET

those of us who have been playing for a wee while should stop to guide newbies along, velvet there is a bit of hottility and silly newbies, for example when the guy, on my team, snipered me with the flag on scarabee as i was passing the tower on way to cap

I wanted to crush him like this paper cup.........

but cound, scream but be nice

I don't think that a 'newbie' server is necessary, just that us lot should allow the new guys the mistakes that they sometimes make. That way everyone can learn, We can be taught patience

and the new peeps can learn not to shoot their team mates...

This is an excellent idea which would ensure better games for the more experienced players too (less llamas

on thier server )

I think after the game I've just had newbie servers has to be a top priority... Shelob will hopefully back me up here as despite being on a team with 5 other people against 3 on his team I may as well have been playing on my own (for about 2 hours ffs)...

If playing Tribes on the net is going to be reduced to newbie filled servers who probably haven't read the fucking manual and just fly into rockets and turrets like there is no tomorrow then theres little point in playing on public servers...

It so easy nowadays to get completely unbalanced teams due to half a dozen newbies all ending up on the same side... I want to give them a chance to learn the game but not when it completely ruins it for everyone else on the server (although I can't imagine they enjoy losing game after game)...

I'll stop now as I'm pissed off...

Hehe yeah thats an equal reason I agreed in first place (equal with more fun for the newbies). It just aint much fun when your team is just cannon fodder.
I was in those games btw - forgot to sign with my tribes nick above.

Id suggest a newbie server, if only i wasnt so cynical about the human race. Basically we all know that there will always be llamas who play on servers simply to wipe out newbies.

Another (probably stupid) idea would be for the teams to be selected each game on frags, so the top scorer from the previous game goes on team1, 2nd scorer on team2, 3rd on team1, 4th on team 2, and so.

I know this probably wouldnt work properly, but it might help balance it out a bit.

That is actually a great idea... The might be a slight imbalance as if you're on a good side you tend to score better even if really you're shite, but it might help sort things out...

Anyone fancy writing a mod???

I don't think that organising the teams based on score in the previous game is a good idea at all. It is a team game and personal score is not particularly related to how well they play the game. The people with the highest scores are usually those who romp around the midfield disk-duelling everyone whereas, for example, the good defenders often don't score very highly.

For this to work at all well, it would need a considerable change to the scoring, e.g. turret kills, bonuses for flag carrier killing, points for destroying enemy equipment etc. However, I believe the constant team switching would tend to interfere with what good teamplay there is.

As for the "newbie server" concept, I suspect this would be seriously abused by aliased players "having a laugh" leading to lots more bad feeling than there appears to be at present. Besides, I also think that playing through all of the training missions (and learning from them, e.g. setting and following waypoints and inventory favourites), then having a quick look at the maps for the game type you are going to play (to get at least an inkling of where things like flags/objectives are) and then playing on servers with better players is the best way to learn the game.

What it really needs is for more of the good players to consider switching to the losing team to even things up (preferably picking a newbie to switch with).

Of course, there aren't enough servers full stop to support this game at it's current popularity level let alone if it becomes incredibly popular. We need more servers!!!

I'm starting a newbie training night on *cough* WirePlay *cough* tomorrow and most Wednesdays from 8pm if any of you 'experienced' players want to help out (or in the case of Cuba come along and ask how not to wear fat armour
wink.gif
)...

Um, email me on velvet@funkateers.co.uk if you're interested...

In the absence of a newbie server the best way i found to learn was to get someone I knew to run a local server and we connected peer to peer where he demonstrated all the stuff like favourites, targetting, deployables, controlling turrets, etc.

After that 2 hour training session I at least am competent, even if im not a good player
smile.gif

Since then I have done the same thing for other people I know who are just getting int o tribes (cue star wars quote).

Another good tip is to run a local server by yourself and go and shoot various things like static turrets with different weapons so you know things like you can take an indoor turret out with 1 plasma gun, but a big turret needs 2 plsma guns or a single mortar gun.

We just need to fit all that on the MOTD so the newbies know not to enter the public servers

The training school went down well though:
www.funkateers.co.uk/tribes/news/training.htm

Going to keep it running as it gets all the silly questions out of the way in an environment people are not afraid to ask them...

or alternativly you can take out the shielded big turrets as a light with an elf gun and grenade/mine combo

if you use sensorjammer pak turret wont see you but you prolly run out of elf nrg

if you use nrgpak - elf doesnt drain it at all (but you'll prolly take some hits from the turret first)

fire the elf at the turrt till it stops shooting, walk up to it drop a mine and a grenade or two at its base - walk back outa blast radius still firing elf gun

1....2....3... BOOM no more turret

this works on all shielded items such as rocket turrts and sensors, bit of a bastard to do elf turret tho - cos they drain you just as quick, then you cant elf drain them

If u stand out of Elf turrets range and elf the elf turret (need to get x-hair right on it) u can drain the Elf turret till it stops being able to elf u, then run into range (still elfing it) and grenade it. But by now you've prolly been shot :_)
