Battleground FAQ?

Hi all. First post int the forum - have just made lvl 20 (finally!), and have searched all the DAOC site I know for a Battleground FAQ. Ideally, I'm looking for something that covers not just the basics, but also the practical stuff (such as should I wait till 24 before going to BG1, can I go solo as a Runie etc)

Thanks in advance

I dont know of one but why not just as here, we would be more than glad to help.

Yes you can solo as a runie but you will get jumped by assasins a hell of a lot.

Personally I'd wait until lvl23 or 24 before going to BG's but if your finding lvling hard then you can have fun in BG's regardless of lvl, you'd be better off grouping though at lvl20.

Please come to BG1. I highly suggest you solo ALL the time and you will find it a lot easier to get RPs if you keep your shields down. :)

disclaimer: I am NOT an evil Stealther and I promise I won't kill you.

~cough~

Thanks to idiot for the helpful response. For Sisypoo and others, I promise that if I will walk alone, ungrouped, very Slooowly, with no bubble up & no shield cast...and I promise that there will no be 1 or 2 fgs stealthed/otherwise hidden nearby :)

:) And there was me thinking that the use of a smiley at the end of a post connoted irony! :)

Anyway, back OT, if someone (ideally a caster) could give me a 4-5 line description of what they actually do when just when they enter a BG, and how they group with others etc, that would be much appreciated.

I can of course simply stumble onto the BG, probably wreak a carefully planned Middie stealth action, give the other side billions of rps with my repeated death...but I'm looking for what Robert Frost might have once described as the road less travelled by! :)

Thanks in advance again!

Ahh a well versed man !

Seriously, when I played my first caster this kinda what I did:

1. Find who has the CG (chat group which everyone who is from a realm in the BG should use to communicate whats happening etc.. its worth persisting though if people dont answer at first - couple of "who has CG for thid" normally works ;) ) for Thid - once ported usually people gather outside of their keep and groups are made from there. Its a good time to to say "*class*, lvl, LFG" and see what response you initially get. Casters, as a rule, don't normally have a problem getting grouped as they provide a decent balance to an attacking or defending force - ie. combination of nukes, mez, snare, dots and buffs.

2. Once initially grouped (or even if not in a group) buff people around you with damage adds/speed/blade turn etc.. - though concentration based magic should be saved for your group as these buffs are limited.

3. Follow & listen to others - most people in thid, will mostly have a rough idea of whats happening and with use of the main chat group (see 1.), know what action is happening where.

4. Watch your back & stay close to others - cannot stress this enough - Casters have weak armour and not exactly amazing hitpoints and stealthers/rogue characters will take advantage of this (infact most characters will go for you anyway in thid, as it tends to more of all or nothing type place ;) - see alb "zerg" ;)) - just stay close to your group or a group of people & let them know if you see something kicking off or come under attack !

5. Learn from your mistakes & experiment - find out what spell works best for different situations - if something doesnt work - ask someone on the forums or find out from the wealth of knowledge out there on the net !

6. Bloody enjoy yourself - dont get caught up in the petty - "they camped our TK", "they zerged us" or "nerf *insert toon who ganked you here*" - lots of aspects of DAoC will seem unfair at times and others you will feel like a god, thats the beauty of playing a game like this ;)

just have fun !!!

From the position of an Alb caster..

Being a PBAOE bitch I tend to try and get groups so they can all fling themselves on the enemy and occupy them while I can run up and start hammering the AOE to hopefully kill them all.

Unfortunatly, it doesn't tend to work 95% of the time, and I end up imitating a sick cow.

Either that or my weakass firebolt actually manages to hit for a decent amount of damage and oneshots a poor yellowcon :D

I was only joking. No need to resort to crude name calling. :p

...unless it was a simple case of 'typoitis'.

Anyhoo, lots of good advice above.

* Stay close to others and DON'T go wandering off by yourself (as much as I would like you to ;))

* Ignore the elitists and try to have fun.

* Stealthers pretty much work by themselves. Don't worry about screwing up their plans because, well, they don't have any. ;)

* ~cough~ Don't use shields.

* Enjoy it while it lasts because BG is possibly the BEST time you will have in RvR. It is a TRULY level playing ground and there are no issues of Shadow/Infi/Nightzergs wandering around buffed up to the eyeballs.

* For that Sissypoo crack you are sooooo gonna die! :D Stupendous Man is keeping his eyes peeled for you! :D

running around solo isnt impossible, ive seen many runies do it, it especially helps if a nice shaman has given you end regen and (if youre lucky) and survive the PA/BS and then the DoT then you can root him/her, and nuke him to hell!

otherwise stay with group and learn the locations, no use people saying albs at mb if you dont know a hb from a ck ;)

Thanks again everyone -

Will try all of those useful tips and will still doubtless get ganked, but hopefully now less than would otherwise have been.:) Will probably wait till 23 b4 I go to Thid, but will look out for you lot (keenly, in some cases) when I get there!

Cheers

Cheers guys

Oh and Sissyfoo - it was a genuine typo...I'd like to think that if I was trying to be insulting, I'd achieve something a little more biting than that! :)

One big tip:

Go the first time during off peak hours and learn your way around. Once you are up and running all directions will be based on locations rather than actual cardinal points, so its important to learn how to get from one spot to another, preferably by the back routes.

One little tip:

Ask who has the keep while you are on the pad, by doing a Thidranki /who. It helps if you plan strategy ahead.

Ive not got a caster char other than a 21 healer but i do have a 34 hunter goes by the name of balthus.Just a word of warning if u do go round solo and a hunter/archer type hits you with the 1st crit shot, dont run, turn and blast trying to interupt the draw of the bow cause if u run u dead.
Oh and dont think u safe sitting outside thids gate, ive picked off a lot of casters sat up there cause ive got good range arrows/bow and can 2 hit casters sat on the doorstep,if u need to heal,go inside.
Other than that its a breeze goin solo, lol ;)
have fun.

Good advice!! I once ran up to ck and spammed my enter / exit macro then some zerker came out of nowhere and killed me, and I didn't port - damn must have been a bug

I said I was dead just outside keep door please rez - once I got rez I thought - better get inside ck quick before some stealther rez kills me so I run back up to door and spam enter exit macro - and I don't port and get killed by some archer.

At that point I realised the gatekeeper looked a bit different from usual.

Doh!

Thanks again for the replies - if possible, could someone let me know what a ck or pad etc is, since this is my first character, and he's all alone and his mummy's not near etc etc.

Oh and Sissyfoo - I assumed that I'll be "pwned" because you're such a 'L33T D00D'? :)

Map of Thid

PK or TK = portal keep / telekeep
so for example MPK is the "midgard outpost".

B = Bridge
so for example AB is the bridge gonig from the CK to APK.

and as stated already CK = Central Keep which is that big keep in the middle which we fight over :D

Hope it helps

Thanks again folks - by the time this Thread finishes, we'll practically have the bones of a newbie Battleground FAQ. :)

Last question (for the moment!) for middies

Can I get teleported to Thid from any Frontier area, or do I need to go to a specific zone to get to Thid?

PS - Thanks for the map, Idiot, that really does help me orientate!

Bit confused about what you mean, the only pad that will take you to enemy frontiers and to the BG's is in Svasud, quite helpfully there is a bindstone there too.

and things as "Forest (midside)" or "hills" sometimes called "sniper hill (midside)" might be usefull too. or hib ruins

bg1 isn't that big so you should get your way around pretty fast

Thanks again Idiot - the map I was using unhelpfull referred to Mus, yggdra Forest and Raumeric as "Frontier Zones", so I had assumed that there was an access from each of them!

Finally got to Thid via Svasud, found the pad there, bought the medallion, didn't realise I had to wear it, missed the first gate, got to Thid, hit (but didn't kill) a couple of albs with bolts, and then had my ass handed to me! :)

Was v good fun, and I'll definately be back for more. I did seem to be the only level 21 there tho' - Everyone else seemed to be 24!

Dont be such a pessimist conch :p

We all suck the first time round mate. Yeah the majority are lvl24 because it makes such a huge difference but you can still have a lot of fun before that lvl.
