Judge for yourself

To me it looks like a blatent rip-off from the classic Battle Royale story.

* For those not familier, Battle Royale is a famous book about a class of troublesome school kids that get placed on an island and forced to kill one another until only 1 is left alive and then set free. Whilst the whole thing is broadcast live for the audiance at home to bet on etc.
Later turned into a film and manga.

Well, similar story for sure, but like other hollywood ripoffs(ring as an example), might still be good.

Steve Austin is an "oomfy" character for sure :D

sounds a bit like battle royale meets the truman show.

i heard there are plans to make a hollywood version of battle royale, which i wasnt too pleased about but then thought maybe it would have all the usual hollywood darlings in it getting slaughtered and i wouldnt mind seeing that.

Vince Mcmahon is also an executive producer of the movie.

I must have seen half a dozen films with this basic concept.

Battle Royal was Published in 1999?

Turkey Shoot was made in 1982 and is probaly alot more similar to this movie.

So, who is ripping who off. :p

I cant see how a stunner would be useful considering everyone else has automatic weapons :)

Tho I bet somewhere Austin will find a hidden cache of steel chairs to wreak havoc.

Most probably going to be dragged to see this by a few friends, never saw Battle Royale, but I've heard of it. Might need to *cough* and get it.

Can't say im that enthuisiastic about it, the trailer looks pretty poor, and to be honest, you loose alot of the atmosphere and shock value by having hardened killers on the island.

Part of what made Battle Royale so good was the element of having school kids and friends who'd normally never kill someone forced to look inside themselves and find out what they are truely capable of when their very survival depends upon it.

All the friendships, school-yard alliances and reality are lost when you have a bunch of killers there instead whom everybody already knows can't be trusted and will kill on sight.

I'd much rather of seen a big hollywood version of the proper Battle Royale, that would hopefully stay true to the original.

I've heard that Hollywood had plans of making a Battle Royale movie themselves with much of the same concept (school kids, island etc) quite some time ago. Doubt it's this one though, this one seem to be running some kind of other concept, much less thrilling. Many people that really liked Battle Royale are opposed to Hollywood making their version of Battle Royale. I am a bit sceptic as well, will probably suck bigtime.

I agree with Kagato on that the shocking and interesting thing with Battle Royale was the concept of a class of close friends and youngsters having to partake in this game. If it's a bunch of criminals/killers etc, it's not that interesting any more.

Personally I've seen Battle Royale probably too many times and It's probably one of the best movies I've seen, also bought the book and read it, and I think it's great! Battle Royale II: Requiem was a bit hmm. I liked some of the twists, but all in all it failed to be as shocking as the first one (as often with sequals)

Agreed, Requiem was extremely dissapointing as a sequiel for much the same reasons, the whole shocking element of the first film was totally removed. No more betrayels or tested loyalties, no question of 'could you honestly kill your friend if your life depended on it'. Those are the things that made the first film so unique, would the school yard gangs hold together ? can you trust your friend with your life? would you take advantage? can the girls use sex as a weapon ? would you murder a class mate with your bare hands ?
Non of that existed in Requiem it was just a war film with kids instead.

I thought the Battle Royale manga was pretty decent as well, it dragged things on far far to much at times but it did give you a chance to get more back ground on the characters (usually just before they die horribly) which explains why they react as they do better.

And on the final note, why the heck are some people here getting excited just because a stupid wrestler is going to be in the Condemned film? It's a bloody wrestler lol, just a pansy with muscles acting around in a ring doing fake moves that wouldn't hurt a fly. yeesh.

I was about to mention that one :( I, unfortunately, watched Internal Affairs after having seen The Departed, which made it a bit pointless as it's more or less an exact copy, the last thirty or so minutes in particular.
I loved Battle Royale, and I'm not really in favour of remaking or copying movies, unless it's like a whole damn lot better than the original, so I doubt I'll be checking this one out.
Anyway, I quite liked Battle Royale 2 aswell, despite what critics have been saying about it, but I only found some really dodgy subtitles for it, so I didn't watch more than the first thirty or so minutes, as I can't be arsed watching a movie without knowing what's going on :p
