Basic Video Editing

I have no idea how to do it, or what software to use, so if anyone could advise what programs are the best to do these things then I'd appreciate it.

I want to know how to add mp3/mp4 tracks to an .avi, and also how to have lettering on-screen, and that I can edit the duration of etc. For example, ten seconds into the recording, I wanted to have the words "To the left" on the screen for 2 seconds, what could I use to do that? =)

sony vegas is a good one. you can download it. from somewhere. wink wink.
its really good. nice and easy to use

if you want to get to grips with the basics, just use windows movie maker. its actually quite diverse and a lot of daoc vids have been made using that.
the layout is basically the same (minus some advances of course)

Windows movie maker works very well as a starter, then i could recommend buying*cough* adobe premiere. It's rather simple "advanced" program.
