Just heard on the radio about a woman who had £6 in her bank account. When she went to the cash point for a balance enquiry, it told her she had £134,996 in credit. She went on a £33000 spending spree and gave £40K to two of her mates. Nice.

Well, not really nice as...dumbass really. LOADS of extra cash on your account, don't spend it, not until it's been sitting there for a good ol' time or you check where it's from.

She's about to be in 130k in debt.

i doubt the bank can take the money back after they gave it to you, surly its their fault and they have to sort it out?

Pretty sure they can demand it back. After all, she knew it obviously wasn't hers but instead of asking them to check for a mistake she went off and spent it...

Now, if she'd asked and been told by teh bank that there was no mistake, that'd have been a whole different ball game.

What you do is leave it in your account and try not to touch any of it. Worst case scenario: it gets claimed back and you've done nothing wrong. Best case: the money's yours. I'm pretty sure the bank has the right to take it back, but I'm not sure after how long it becomes yours. I got a feeling its 12 years - ie if no one claims it after 12 years its all yours.

Might well be. As I say, heard it on LBC 97.3 radio. You can imagine the bird though. Some 20 year old dumb bint with hoop earings and hair pulled back. Obviously not intelligent enough to think before acting. Her own stupid fault IMO.

I would be happy to wait 12 years for that kind of cash tbh, tis silly to take it and alert the bank by doing so. Better to ignore it and hope the banks don't catch on till it is too late :)

Aye, should keep it untouched. In that kind of instance, worst case scenario is a lot of interest I guess :D

no the bank made the error, ie the money was put in wrong account an thier are completely entitled to take the money back, if it was a few hundred an the custoemr didnt realise ect the bank would possilbe let it slide as a show of good faith, but with that amount they will take every penny back an say tought shit love, an possible steal her house if she has one

Correct BUT

I have had a similar case (with a close friend) where he had 7k put in his account instead of 700.

he spent the lot and had to pay back 7k at 25pence per week.

Thats absolutely fuck all and thats all he claims to afford a week so its a debt for life that costs you NOTHING in interest ;d

doing that does give you a bad debt though, and basicly screws up any chance of you ever getting a decent rate mortgage.

Nah. Even being declared bankrupt only fucks your credit rating for 6 years. Not for "ever"

technicaly yes, but it still puts a big fat mark agaist your account saying your a past bankrupt. The way lending is going with more n more bad debt, lenders are getting very selective.

The bank has the right to claim it back. End of, though transfering the money into a high interest account is a very good idea.

Also in the case of the Ebay kid, you reckon he left negative feedback? (missing 2 games!)

Unfortunately for the woman what she`s done is known as stealing. If she new the money didn`t belong to her she should have notified the bank.

Now when the bank realise and they will realise at some point they can demand all of the money back and if she cannot repay it they will destroy her credit rating and quite possibly bankrupt her forcing her to sell all her property at auction leaving her homeless with nothing but the clothes she`s wearing.

I guess thats worth a shopping spree and giving your friends someone elses money? or maybe not

The least she could except is a CCJ with a court ordered voluntary payment arrangement which means she will not get any form of credit again for the forseable future

That will be paid, with that amount, in about 600 years right? 25/week, 1/month, 12/year, 120/10years, 1200/100years.

Let's assume your friend has friends or family. They get that when he croaks. Also, by that time the costs; the payment bills, calculations, bank account fees, transfer fees, etc etc etc(whatnot they take) and the possible interest rate will have atleast doubled that "loan".

So yeah, he maybe a moron who takes "free" money, but in about 70 years his kids will be real pleased with the 10k(or more) loan he's leaving them.

When will people understand that there is NO, NEVER, EVER, "a deal that looks too good to be true".

Well it's not actually.

Unless UK(we talking about a UK person right?), has some seriously f*cked up banks.

Probably gets taken from the goverment, which in return, is paid by the whole nation.
