Personally I have had good dealings with HSBC.

Previous to that I've used Natwest who were utter utter cunts.

I use Halifax. The are evil (being a big bank), but they have good online facilities (handy if you are going abroad), and they've never hassled me.

And Natwest are scum.

I'm with the Northern Bank, a local variant of Natwest, and I can attest that they are indeed scum.

The easiest way to pick a bank is:

(a) Think of your local high street.
(b) Think of the banks in your local high street.
(c) The first bank you think of you should go with.

Easiest isn't the best way to go though, is it?

What happens if his High Street only has a Nat West?

You could try one of the Online Banks...like Cahoot or First Direct.

I am with Barclays and I find them to be very good. I have not had any problems...

You do need a job if you want to open a Current Account...

Try choosing a bank that will allow you to access them from different countries!

Citi Bank is very good for this as they have loads of branches throughout the world. May come in handy if you will be travelling alot in your gap year.

FYI Northern Bank is a sub of the National Australia bank. Its the Ulster Bank which is the Natwest sub...both scummy tho

Go with Barclays. Never had trouble with them extending overdrafts when I was a student. Never had trouble keeping the overdrafts when I wasn't a student. Online banking is spiffy with them as well. Money transfers are a doddle and the statements are first rate.

Nationwide Building Society...

Their internet banking is fantastic and they operate on the basis of making your life easier and not lining the pockets of its shareholders.

And if it did go from being a mutual if you had your account with them long enough they may give you either shares or a one off payment.

I have my Credit Card/Savings/Current Account all with them as well as my £7k loan never had any problems with em

Go with an Internet bank. I'd recommend Cahoot. Having worked for one of the high street banks I can tell you that they will do everything in their power to screw you as often as possible. Seriously, there is NO benefit whatsoever to getting a high st bank account any more.

Once you're a student that changes, because they offer the best facilities (ie a fat overdraft), but even then I'd just open one, empty it, and pour it into your other account, then leave the o/d account dormant.

HSBC or Lloyds, I'm with Lloyds but being abroad I should shift to HSBC since their Saigon branch is actually helpful.

I have been with teh NatWest for 15 years, never had any problems. I have 2 current accounts with them, and have had 2 mortgages there.

This only proves that different people want, and get, different things from a bank, and all branches of the same bank are different anyway.

For me Barclays were the scum, and I would never go back there.

My Parents had a Barclays account at the same time I did, and my mum picked up my chequebook by mistake and wrote a cheque. The only problem was that it was for a stage payment on the garage we were having built...£3000. (and this was 18 years ago when that was a lot of money).

Did Barclays notice the fact that the signiature was wrong?

Did Barclays question the fact that £3000 was being drawn from an account with £15.32 in it???

Did they fuck, they just handed over the cash, then sent me a nasty letter telling me I was £2984.68 overdrawn.

Did Barclays apologise when I complained about the above things they may have noticed?

Did they fuck. They just sent me a snotty letter refering me to the inside of the front cover of my chequebook where it says 'Do not let other people use your chequebook' Like I did it on purpose!!! Can't find your cheques Mum? Here use mine.

I left as soon as I paid off the overdraft!

All banks suck arse and are evil scheming cunt0rs after your money. Really, there is very little difference between any of them, go for the most convenient one, the one with the most cashpoints & branches near you, all other differences are cosmetic since underneath they are all run by the same scum guzzling excretions of weaselness from Satan's own mangy armpits.

I've got an under 19s account with LloydsTSB and a Student account with Smile.

Lloyds have never done me any harm though they never gave me a proper VISA debit - he tried to set one up and wiped my credit history...

Smile seems OK though paying money in is a drag unless you do online transfers (between different banks) - and that takes 4 days to clear too.
