IWD2 wasn't bad as far as storys go. Just not as epic as BG2 or Torment :p

well to correct all things, i misplaced my cd2 for IWD2 before I finished it, so you're probably right about the story

if they make a bg 3 they better not use a 3d engine like the one used for NWN or they completely ruin the game for me.
on another thing, the second best rpg i've played is fallout 2 (never tried bg1)

the expansions presented decent stories really, nothing as epic as BG, but they kept me in, which is rare for NWN Mods

IWD were nice but mostly action stuff which didn't keep me interested for too long. The IWD 1 expansion was sooooooooo short too, i finished it in 2 or 3 days max.

Bg1 is very nice but imo if you see the whole series after you finished it's really only a prologue for bg2 and ToB which are the main stories.

Bg2 rocked, a great epic story with lots of twists. Joneleth/Irrenicus was classy evil too, loved his story. Best of the series imo, few games have so much context.

In ToB there weren't many twists, pretty straightforward yet exciting story but hands down some of the best encounters i have ever seen in an rpg, the one with the Drow Bhaalspawn still haunts me, never killed Draconis on anything but easy too, even with 2 mages packed with level 9 spells (Time Stop has to be the ultimate cool spell in rpg's).

Torment was dark and deep, never figured if i like BG or Torment more and i think they can't be really compared as their feel is totally different. The one is more geared towards epic and shiny armour while the other is about exploring the dark depths of a nobody's soul. The ending tips the scale towards Torment as i found the ToB ending pretty disappointing, while Torment just pwns all the time but especially after you enter the hag's world it's just unbeleivable.

Baldur's Gate MMORPG would make me drool IRL, since BG series was, and still is, the best singleplayer games ever.

Its possible :) I wonder if they would ever do it, Atari has the rights for Forgotten Realms at the moment (i think)

exactly, the only thing they really have in common is Bioware.
Both rock but are miles apart, BG is a classic DnD game where as Torment was more of a Zak McKraken game with hps, attack rolls etc.. :D
Zak McKraken rocked my world btw

Don't really understand why BG1/2 fanboys always bang on about how special the 2d engine was. Surely BG1/2 were special because of the depth of the story and the character interaction, not the quaint 2D graphics? Thats my opinion anyway. Although it could be argued that a development team may have trouble producing anything as epic as BG1 and producing a decent 3d engine at the same time, but today it is rare for a developer to develop a graphics engine from the ground up anyway. Most will take an existing graphics engine and build a game engine around it.

There are plenty of 3D graphics engines capable of making beautiful looking games and supporting a complex RPG ruleset. It is then down to the developer to make an immersive world, great plot and decent character interaction. I just think that a 2D BG3 would have died on its arse, and only really been bought by the hardcore BG1/2 fanboys, who really represent a (highly vocal) minority of single player CRPG fans.

Face it, 2D CRPGs are a history.

It might be because they haven't made a RPG thats up to BG/PST standards using a 3D Engine (Well...a D&D RPG for those of you who were going to yell Deus Ex at me)

If neverwinter had lived up to its expectations then you there wouldn't be any moans about keeping a 2D engine.

I'm not dissing :)
Just saying after releasing BG2, and NWN promising to be much better it had big boots to fill with those Size 3 Feet.

I recall one of the developers who worked on both BG2 and NWN who said on the NWN forums that its unlikely there will ever be a game like BG1/2 again, since the gaming market has changed so much since BG2. Generally, the expectation from the public and the publishers, is for 3D graphics and for a shorter but more replayable gaming experience. Dumbing down, maybe, but the fact is is that developers have to sell alot more games now than they did in 1999 to stay in business and there are a lot of people playing and enjoying RPGs now who have never played BG1 or 2 (and probably wouldn't even want to).

Also single player games are generally multi-format these days (Morrowind & KotOR both being successful on the XBox) so its unlikely to expect to see any nostalgic return to 200 hour plot driven linear 2D RPGs.

ok, you're forgiven, and you're right, the expectations were enormous!
I just sat here at work thinking what exactly made the bg-series so bloody awesome and I thought of the game Ruins of Myth Drannor (or something like, Pool of Radiance perhabs) which is turn-based so getting from A to B took the best of an afternoon. BG had none of this and you were never stuck, as in really stuck, there was always something to do until you figured out the answer for some tricky quest. this meant it never got boring cuz you were never in a standstill, unlike most other CRPG's ive played and i think that was what kept it interesting, and the fact that there were sooooo many areas and each time you poked around in them you'd find some new stuff or a new way to do things.
NWN is huge as well, but the areas in NWN tend to be rather dead, especially in the player made mode (no disrepect, there are mods twice as good as any mod Bioware ever made). Also the graphics becomes annoying cuz you have a feeling you're always running in the same area no matter what mod you're in because of the limited placeables...
lots of rambling soz, im bored stiff

I've been thinking about installing NWN and trying a few modules :)

I hear a few of them are very good, can anyone recommend any?

The Shadowlords -> Dreamcatcher -> Demon series of mods are very good, author is Adam Miller and you can check all his mods out here http://adamandjamie.com/nwn/

You can definately see his work improve as you work your way through his mods.

There are lots, http://nwvault.ign.com/. The Hall of Fame has the nice ones, Dream Catcher/Shadowlords is definately worth your time imho, epic story, solid non-bugged mod. Also Lords of Darkness, but it's missing the 4th and last part, so the story will not be concluded which really sucks. If you know Drizzt and the Drows A Hunt Through the Darkness fecking rawks! My personal favorite, but then I love being a no-sympathy ewul bastid :flame:
Like i said, lots of good ones, try a few, if they dont catch you in about 30 mins theres a good chance they wont, so move on to the next one.

Oh and for the love of God! Get the CEP-expansion for free off http://nwvault.ign.com/. it has new player made graphics that can boost your gameplay tremendously if you want to change a few items appereance etc, gives you loads more faces for character as well. It's a big download but worth it

BG was better than BG2 cause of the beginnings i think. There wasnt anything in the game per se to make me like BG1 > BG2, but i did. Something about waking up in a tank vs. the more "realistic" setting at the start of BG1 made the tale seem more epic to me.

I liked NWN till i realised they basically repeated the zone layouts/quest structure between sections (lazy bastids). Playing hordes of the underdark atm, seems quite cool :>

Has a brilliant storyline which verges on that of the BG series imo.. I mean:

(Minor Spoilers)
Waking up in one of the most famous citys of Farun,(sp)
Exploring the immagination of a demented wizard,
Venturing through the underdark and commanding an army of rebel drow,
Destroying a Valsharess,
Being sent to hell - and having to find a way out,
Doing battle with an arch-devil (or commanding him to be your slave.)

Really well thought out add-on.. 100 times better than the original module.

If i could edit in this forum i'd instead put MAJOR SPOLIER since you just ruined the game for people who hadn't played it yet (you told them about the twists in the plot etc

But i agree i liked that one much more than the others.
