The rust on my car isn't great, Mercedes' of a late-nineties vintage are renowned for it.

Still, I didn't really expect to see the wire brush attachment on my drill disappear through the front wing.

Fucksocks. New wing time methinks.

probably gonna end up being alot cheaper to just buy a new car then starting to replace rusted panels tho.

i'd say take it to someone that can check the car for rust before you start replacing stuff.

Can you get a %age of the govt's £2k if you're replacing part of a vehicle over 10 years old with a new bit?

Gah that's not good Tom, I see V plates rolling about and some of the rust is pretty poor on them, around the boot lock on a CLK was the last one I saw pretty bad.

Still, I love mercs. A 500 SEC is still in my fantasy garage.

Annoying when you still see some great 80s examples rolling round sans-rust.
Not something I'd expect from that sort of marque - got a 98 Honda with not a single patch of rust on it, and you'd think the Mercs would have a better build quality :/

Mercedes dropped the ball on their build quality around that time, I don't know what the latest ones are like.

My cousin has an SL 500 (to which I was in awe) and I said "wow, how is it?" and he replied "never out the dealership". This was from a conversation a few years ago.

New Mercs are vastly superior to the nineties Mercs, and are also galvanised.

I'm just going to buy a pattern wing, they're only £100 or so, and paint it myself. The chassis is fine, the engine is a peach (225,000 miles and still smooth), and its a really comfortable fast quiet car. It'll do until I have money to replace it - right now I don't. I spent a shit load of money last year on all kinds of things.

Partly, but good build quality doesn't equate to a car's overall reliability.

What's with this free two grand that you get if you've got a shit car? Is it Labour trying to buy poor people's votes or something?

Its an attempt to buoy the car industry in this country. It actually works quite well in Germany, but what annoys me is how they're putting a 'low carbon' spin on the idea.

1. ITS FUCKING CARBON DIOXIDE YOU TWATS. NOBODY TAKES A BATH IN HYDROGEN, THEY TAKE IT IN H2O

2. MOST OF THE ENERGY USED BY A CAR IS IN ITS CONSTRUCTION!

...breathe....
