I hate it when people can't freaking type properly, What is with people who type ""U"" and ""ur"" and ""cu l8r"" Why can't you freaking type properly?
Did it come from cellphones??
----- but that's no excuse! why don't people to type PROPERLY with their cell phone, using T9 - type 733 978 52437 for ""see you later"" instead of cu l8r it's even LESS keypresses and it makes you look smarter.

Before you start citicising it maybe you should find out more about the language you speak everyday....

I agree with the threadstarter. I can understand why people use text abbreviations when they are using their mobile phones, but using it on a forum is a heavy indicator that said individual is heading down the chav path.

The English language is a beautiful thing - use it or keep your opinions to yourself m8, err...

You really should watch Stephen Fry on Jonathon Ross. English is supposed to evolve like this, its why its the greatest language in the world. And yes, it is possible to see trends where this has happened before; a lot of American simplified spellings came about because of the invention of the telegraph and the fact the you were charged by the letter.

Greatest language in the world? Zuh. Languages evolve in general. It's hardly just English.

But yeah, even if that's the case with American spellings, it's not totally comparable. Text speak isn't just the omission of the odd vowel. It's the complete overhaul and reduction of an entire language, with the concomitant loss of clarity and standardisation, within the span of a few years and entirely dependent upon an advance in technology. This is not the usual course of linguistic evolution at all. It's pretty unique.

Standards are good things. Obviously. Clarity is a good thing. Equally obviously. If a language loses either, it'll naturally attempt to regain them. (For example: the loss of distinction between the singular 'thou' and plural 'you'.)

So yeah. This isn't really the same thing as the grammar nazi attempting to preserve outdated or redundant traditions for their own sake, which is what's implied by saying that languages are supposed to evolve like this. I agree that languages are supposed to evolve - I just don't agree that they're supposed to evolve like this.

(Yeah, part of my degree is in linguistics. It's an interesting subject, but I haven't progressed particularly far yet. Give me a few weeks and I'll be able to talk a bit more authoritatively on the history and evolution of language.)

It does makes sense cos "you're" and "your" have different meanings!

shortening "you're" to "ur" seems to be the natural progression from shortening "you are" to "you're". People were probably up in arms when that happened!!
