Having a baby isn't something to be taken lightly, your having a human being and the way you treat them is going to shape them and prepare them to cope with the world. I honestly believe there are some people who should not have children and this is from my own bad experience and partly because of that I myself have chosen never to have them, also because I know that I am too selfish to be a good mother.

anyway I have managed to derail and go off topic, my own personal opinions aside I don't think smacking is a great way to establish respect between child and parent, i don't think it really does much good (many people say "it never did me any harm" but did it help that much either?).

But you would never have been born :-( and that would have been a bad thing.

What if the parent 'decides' to beat thier child half to death day in day out? Should that be allowed?

You'd prefer people "mind thier own business" and allow thousands of children to be physically abused rather than work towards a solution that could allow the parent a free reign, but would also protect children from violent and messed up parents?

Ok, perhaps thats unfair, but you can see what I'm saying. I agree that freedom to bring up your child as you see fit is very very important, but I also strongly believe that children should be protected from physical abuse.

It all boils down to the question: "Where does using smacking as a form of discipline become physical abuse?" Draw that line and you can then take steps to allow parents to use the former, whilst still protecting children from the latter.

Ofcourse not, and that's a bloody stupid ignorant remark.
There's a difference between an educational slap when a kid goes totally out of control and abuse, and it's pretty obvious when you've crossed that line.
Also, there are other ways of abuse, that are much much much more effective in scarring your kid, without laying 1 finger on them. It's the abuse that needs to be looked out for. Not the odd slap to make kids know they're out of line.

An educational slap won't do harm. Sure there may be other ways to raise kids, but this choice is to the parent.

Its a *slightly* sarcastic remark meant to highlight the fact that his statement isnt as catch-all as people seem to be making out. If you'd have read any of my other posts on this topic you would have realised that I'm not being stupid nor ignorant in what I'm saying.

Pretty obvious to whom? try reading my exchange of posts with Huntingtons about 30 to 35 posts up. He seems to think that you cant make the educational slap that you mention legal without allowing child abuse.

I agree with what you are saying here, but the whole root of the problem is that leaving it totally to the parents doesnt always work, and that discussing this problem is not being nosy or butting into "other people's business", its necessary.

Also, there are other ways of abuse, that are much much much more effective in scarring your kid, without laying 1 finger on them. It's the abuse that needs to be looked out for. Not the odd slap to make kids know they're out of line.

You seem to have gotten the wrong end of stick because you've only properly read one line that I've said in this entire thread. If you'd read my earlier posts you'd realise that I do agree with you on the idea that smacking/slaping should be allowed to enforce discipline. I agree that some people take it over the top and call it physical abuse, which is clearly an exaggeration.

An educational slap won't do harm. Sure there may be other ways to raise kids, but this choice is to the parent.

This sums up what I've been trying to say in my previous posts. You've basically just said what I've said in my original post back to me.

Realise that I was posting a sarcastic remark as a forerunner to a post highlighting the problem that some people have with simply "leaving it up to the parent", atleast before you start dishing out ignorant remarks of your own.

Children are protected from physical abuse..so much so that they can do what the hell the like and get away with it.
