ok

1. If q3 crashes, q2 crashes, or HL crashes, and you try to reconnect to a net server again without restarting, mostly itlll just sit there trying to connect, but not working, although it pings great. I think this might be because that port is still open and it cant be used or somming. Same if you get disconnected whilst playing on net.

2. Delete ALL network drivers. Delete everything in network, and reinstall it, delete your modem away, and reinstall it.
It helps a lot sometimes.

Just to add one more thing as well, it is generally network problem, but this can also occurr when you switch ISPs (not in Vendars case as I assume he has a static IP address?). I.e. you are playing quake on RHA, u decide to go to Jolt to get a more stable connection. Problem is your RHA IP address is now authenticated with Id, and you 'may' have to wait for about 5 mins for this authentication to time out. This doesn't always happen, but is something to bear in mind if u need to switch quickly during a game. (ie you warm up on a server, decide to use a diff ISP, then reconnect and have to wait 5 mins). This used to come up as a diff Id message on your screen, but I think they must have changed it in last release.

if Q3 crashes, the game server & auth server don't notice because of the unusual (for lack of a better word) of quitting the game, hence the players in the game see a frozen player for ages @ 999, if prolonged, its usually a dead link, if it starts moving, its just been lagged, see?

now because the auth server ties (attaches, whatever) an ip to the id (key) then unless you're on a stat. ip it has to wait for a bit to make sure you are really gone, before unlocking the key, this is about the 5minute~ period.

static ips can reconnect tho, go figure. :D
