Just saw AVP on DVD for the first time. Yeah I know its been out for ages. Yeah I know there's probably 200 posts on it, but don't care. I'm gonna have my 2 cents.
I enjoyed it. Watched the extended version. Certainly not an all time classic, but its the kind of movie you can just chuck on either on your own or with a few pals round, chill out, and just let the images wash over you.
I think its kind of unfair to criticise the film because it lacked the hightened tension of Alien / Aliens, and/or lacked certain aspects of conveying the sheer alien brutality / intelligence / stalking of the Predator.
Its not that kind of film ! Its Alien v Predator, Alien v Human, and in the end Alien v Predator & Human. I think its a tall order for any director (even Ridley Scott or James Cameron) to retrofit Alien-type clostrophobic terror in 90 minutes whilst giving a decent amount of time to the Predator. There simply isn't enough time to bond with the plight of the humans for you to care enough about them in order to feel terror at what lurks in the dark. Again I'll reiterate - its not that kind of movie.
(I mean in all honesty - how many who remember seeing the original Star Wars movies in a cinema when released - and who loved them - would say that the three new prequels were in no way a disappointment or intended to generate extra income for the franchise ?
)
You also need to bear in mind that its based on the first comic series of AVP, with many of the movie's images being taken from the comic (such as the swarms of Aliens running up the Pyramid towards the Predator).
I think AVP needs to be taken for what it is. Just an enjoyable monster movie with a few special FX. If you watch AVP thinking its going to be another Alien or Predator clone you are going to be disappointed. Its not an adult movie so you can't expect buckets of gore either.
Of course one can dismiss it cynically as a movie just made to make cash, but what movie studio is going to spend $100m and not expect a return on their investment ? The cynics can kiss my ass.
I loved the little links to the Alien movie. Weyland playing with the pen like Bishop played with the knife between his fingers. The gently stirring chains. The nodding duck. Reflections of graphics in Predator's visors, and so on.
I enjoyed AVP, and personally I can't wait for the sequal. Predalien.
