It's not the film that making people excited (I hope, because it does look..erm, dodgy :p), it's the prospect of seeing two of the biggest alien races to grace our screen get it on in royal rumble stylee, granted the genre it's being made in doesn't ring true to me (sure the alien movies were horror/action, with emphasis on the horror, though the Predator movies were primarily action themselves, with dashes of the *things* that make it horrific). The film is the culmination of years of fanboy interest of what it would be like to see them duke it out on the big screen, they've battled in other mediums before (comic books/games/cards), the movie was a given.

Unfortunately, I think Anderson has the small wee problem of "So what's the story? ... elite team of STARS trapped and separated in an old mansion with zombies hunting them down and a sinister corporation trying to cover it up? Great, lets just change the mansion to a giant laboratory, take out the scary bits and replace it with people running around in groups with lots of guns shooting anything and everything that moves"

(I didn't like Resident Evil all that much if you hadn't noticed already :p)

Not that i'm prejudiced against the guy, quite liked Event Horizon. Though having a PG13 certificate makes me think it's just going to be many fights and little plot (read: not scaring the bejesus out of people), not that it matters, just that the horror of both series will be diluted down to a bunch of misfits screaming when they see an alien/predator/cute fluffy kitten when they jump out every so often.

...bugger, what was the question again? :(

Great film. Consistently comes in the top 10 films of all time by film critics ... at least according to a piece I read in our local paper. Escapist no brainer films can be enjoyable, and I have certainly seen some in my time (Escape from New York anyone?) but I certainly don't salivate about seeing them.

Shawshank was on at the weekend and I actually got quite excited about the prospect of seeing it. The fact that you don't like it says a lot about you bud :)
Stalker fs!

I know Shawswank was on at the weekend. Luckily BBC don't do adverts, so none of its tedious dirge interrupted my Pulp Fiction viewing pleasure.

impho it's going to be shit. one big cgi-driven fight glued together with wooden one-liners and possibly a comic sidekick thrown in for good measure. bit of a shame, but tbh I expected no less.
Judge dread?

Nothings better than a mindless action film like SWAT / Leathal Weapon on a saturday night. If this film isn't a CGI fest it might be quite good

Shawshank is a good enough film but terribly over rated.

I agree about the opinion thang, but then my opinion is just as valid as somebody else. My saying that I don't understand why people salivate about a forthcoming brainless action film doesn't make it any less enjoyable for them.

Not one for excitement then? Guns and blood can, and do, involve good plots.

Sure, Leon is probably one of my favourite films of all time. I also have a lot of affection for Underworld, although 90% of that is probably due to my unrequited love for Kate Beckinsale :)

Even Underworld has a coherent plot, though, and is about more than just getting cheap kicks out of watching werewolves and vampires kick seven bells out of each other ... which, frankly, is all you will see in AvP. Two of the best sci-fi monsters of the last 20 years having a go at each other. And although Predator 1 and Aliens were both decent films they were hardly classics. Alien is another of my all time favourites, but the rest of their respective films were a pile of dog droppings.

From the trailer, it looks like the fighting will be in the style of the old Godzilla(japanese) films.

There is strong potential here oO

From an early pre-production interview with the director he stated that he much prefers costumed actors over CGI effects. He said that for the most part it will be guys in suits with only the tails drawn on in CGI. He also stated he's been a fan of the genre from an early age and read the comic books.

Judge Dredd, Resident Evil and Event Horizon IMHO were all "ok" films with the latter being my favourite of the bunch.

I don't have over the top hopes for the film but it is cool ot see Aliens and Predators suit up and be on the screen again. I've got the Predator special edition DVD, got Predator 2 on VHS (cos it's not so good but is quite funny) and also own the Alien Quadrilogy box set (Region1 cos it's got all the commentaries, even if the packaging's not as cool as the R2 set). I've got a ton of Alien and Predator comics too.

The "Vs" in the title gives you a fair idea that it's not going to be the most intelectually stimulating film ever. I mean you don't turn up to a boxing match and expect to have to solve quadratic equations between rounds.

I read somewhere that Anderson went over budget on the film and so Fox decided to make the film a PG-13 to try and make money back on it, so now you have cut aways from all the juicy action bits.

Good assessment. I'd be surprised if the film deviates at all from this description.

Predator has always looked like he's made of plastic.

It's probably because he is.

Firstly I dislike Anderson as much as the next hack director so I wasn't exactly expecting wonders when I saw AvP. However the good news is that he's obviously based the whole setup more on the comics than the actual Alien / Predator films. It almost has a coherent story though having background knowledge of the comics / AvP universe definetely helps.

Main problems are :-

  • Not remotely scary and no nasty Predator violence / gore.
  • The human characters are all just crap and are basically cannon fodder. Even the women lead has all the characterisation of a wet fish.
  • Too short a film and seems kinda rushed towards the end. Starts off slow then when the fighting starts ... *blink* film over. Probably cut out lots to get the kiddie rating.

Anyway, good popcorn movie and nowhere near as bad as most people expected.

From bloody-disgusting...

About the studio's cutting of the film, which he had no control over, he said, and I quote, "All of the best scenes were cut." Anderson was obviously very annoyed at the way the film was released. However, this was not purely because of the PG-13 limitation, which incidentally, the studio enforced THREE WEEKS before the release date! It was always going to be R until then. Part of the reason for the cutting was that some of the effects were not ready by the time the release date came around. The effects team had very little time to do anything.

As far as the content that was cut, apparently we see all those who die, die on screen, but he also said that there is a sub-plot that we will have to wait for on DVD. Yes there will be an R-rated Director's cut DVD although they don't know the release date yet.

I think I'll leave seeing this until the DVD is released.

the film was great i thought.. definitely worth the watch

a unique storyline and plot twists brought a nice change to the shitty romantic comedies and spandex hero crap ive had to sit through the past few months

The plot thickens. It seems to me that we could well have a re-run of Alien 3 here ie: the director had an idea which was actually pretty damn good but then the bloody suits from the studio step in and hey presto; shit film.

PG13 ffs?

Neither Aliens nor Predator are right without gore, violence and the scary bits.

The Quadrilogy box set has a directors cut of Alien 3. Which I think is the second best in the series after Alien anyway :)

Seen it.

The story is very weak at best. it just happens at just the right time

The action is good although I would have liked to see the pred's use there staff's more on the alien's.

There is actually part's of this film I found my self laughing out loud when they were trying to be dramatic to be honest ^^. The big explosion and the hero's /Heroine's running. a Womans long flowing hair with fire in the background and a Pred's long dreads flow in the background of fire running side by side made me nearly fall off my seat tbh :D

so I really wasnt impressed at all and I was looking forward to it with the comics before it : /

Don't be fooled by Paul Anderson. This is his oldest trick - release a film that has the right script and funding, then bodge it to fuck as he's a SHIT DIRECTOR...then after people comment "Erm...its a bit shit?" he cries wolf about how the studios interfere.

He had free reign with Event Horizon and he had free reign with AvP. He started screaming there would be a director's cut of EH straight after its poor returns at the box office and of course we never saw one. He is already crying over this one. The guy just cannot direct, he is a shite hack of the worst kind.

Want a laugh? He's been hired to direct a film of Driv3r the game...oh dear.
