Help me! Been reading about recent relic raids in DAoC and I feel the need to play it again. :/

Thing is I'll need to play for TWO YEARS SOLIDLY to be anywhere near 'powerful' enough to do anything worthwhile. And there's only Wij playing it these days and he won't want to hang around the likes of me.

Maybe I should buy that Shrouded Isle thing when it comes out or maybe I just shouldn't bother and save up my life ready to blow it all when Freelancer is released.

The agony.

I WAS IN THE FIRST BARRYSWORLD DAOC CLAN, YOU KNOW?!

Also, for a game that's supposed to revolve around immersion and role-play, the DAoC players do a hell of a lot of whining about the engine and publishers.

:|

HEY GUYS, MAYBE IT'S NOT A BUG THAT PETS CAN SEE THROUGH STEALTH* MAYBE THAT'S JUST THE WAY OF THIS IMAGINARY WORLD.

*Dunno what this means.

It's odd, yknow, (and I haven't read anything other than the last two posts by Summo just now) but I was just telling the clan green channel (nobody listened, I was literally telling the channel!!!!!) how I remember becoming so much more immersed in games like lemmings and the sonic series on the megadrive than any game of recent years. It was triggered by me downloading some crap-sounding but well-made midis of said games, and choking up a little with the memories. I wonder when anyone'll start making good games again.

It'll never happen, Lou simply because you're older now. We can't get immersed in games like we used to. There's never been a 'golden age' or if there has, it's all the time and people just get older and remember the golden age being a long time ago.

I always think of Elite being the best game evah, but then again I've probably spent just as long playing GTA3.

I dunno. Bed time. I know that.

Well I don't know. I think it's just that there's no novelty any more. So the first good games you ever play are incredible and new and everything, and everything after is a pale copy, even if the stuff you played to begin with was merely a clone itself. Uhm. So theoretically if somebody came up with something astoundingly new...

I'm not entirely sure about that either though, because there have been a (very) few games of recent times that have really surprised me. Simcity2000 being one of them. I could play that for hours upon hours. And at the same kinda time, the original C&C - another type of game that I hadn't tried before that. And, even more recently, Soul Calibur - the sole reason I ended up getting a dreamcast.

Though I do see what you're saying. I'm just hoping against it.

I've managed to stay immersed in Champ Man for the past year.

This = correct.

As a kid I played any old shit and loved it.

There are plenty of great, fun, pretty etc games about. You just need to recapture that youthful innocence and allow yourself to enjoy them. Recently I've had a stonking good time with :

Jedi Knight 2 - just play with the lightsabre.... fantastic! Even if you can't be arsed with the whole single-player thing and all those missions blah blah just put cheats on, spawn a bunch of shadow troopers and do lightsabre duels, laugh, I nearly wet myself.

Ghost Recon (+the addons) - PC & XBox, great laugh, brilliantly done, lovely graphics, .50 calibre sniper rifles to the head at 2km, great laugh on XBox live too :)

Mechwarrior4 Mercenaries - teh king of mech games, maybe *slightly* too simplified in terms of customizing mech loadouts but makes up for it totally with all the arena stuff, gorgeous graphics and very very good multiplayer.

Worms Armageddon - yeah ok, I know, but it's great :) Not exactly new I'll give you that but top marks for longevity Team17. Get some mates round, get pissed and all play on the same pooter with 3-4 worms each. Little Old Lady bomb \o/

Dungeon Siege - great multiplayer again, simple & fun & pretty, a nice piece about why DS is still so much fun here.

Oh and plenty of other things. Spose my (long-winded and rambling) point is that if you're finding you no longer enjoy games as much as you used to then take a break, get off the PC for a week or two then come back and try some things you haven't played before and let yourself enjoy some the bee00tiful games that are around now. Personally I think we're pretty much in a golden age of gaming right now... the technology available to games developers is just stupendous, games look & feel better than they ever have done before and there's 1000's of them being released all the time! Wahey!

Yes! Saber-only JKII is great! Good game that nobody seems to talk about. The single player is only good if you enable cheats - saber from the outset, full force powers, dismemberment and God mode. Hack and slash fun!

Fuhhh, I have to disagree there. JK2, while I did enjoy the demo lots, gets tedious fast. Dungeon siege gets tedious faster (it's so utterly devoid of depth, no matter what you say about the graphics). Really don't want to have to set up all the controls and crap with another Mechwarrior game like I did with both 2 and 3. Worms I've played 3 versions of so far, again just can't be bothered playing it all over. And really don't like war sims. MY point being, I don't give a crap about the graphics, and all the gameplay is so generic. Blohe.

Stu still plays too :)

There's plenty of buffbots around these days to help you breeze through the lvls. And you could always come along to watch a relic raid from the safety of the mud and grass :)

Actually I haven't played DAoC for two weeks or so. Been practising AoM. Loki Hersir rushes, Thor dwarf builds, Ra Fast Heriocs and Zeus Hoplite rushes. I'm fantastically sad really. Fancy a game ? :D

I too am getting twitchy about playing daoc again and need others to play with to advance.
So, WTF is a buffbot?

You own two accounts, and one account is purely to add buffs to your main. The rest of the time it stands there looking AFK somewhere far enough away to not get killed but close enough to still be effective.

Thats what I've derived so far.

And some people will villify you for using one, and some people will say "OMG FFS, how can u b ub3r if u donthave a buff b0t?!? l4mer.! FFS" and some people are just indifferent to it all.

Take this knowledge and use it well Ted San.

A Shaman/Cleric/WhateverTheyHaveInHippieLand with high Augmentation specification for good 'buff' spells. You need to have them on a different account to your main char then start it on a 2nd PC, get it to cast all the lovely buffs on you and set it to follow you round WITHOUT making it part of your group. Hey Presto - you can kill characters twice as nasty as you could before and get twice as much XP. Also if you get in trouble he can heal you although that will lose you some XP.

Simple really :)

Ppl generally only call u lame if u use a buffbot in RvR. To get your alts lvl'd quicker in PvE is generaqlly considered fine. After all someone had to put in a shedload of effort to lvl the buffbot in the first place. I know, I took one from 13 to 40 :)

You know, I thought the answer to my question would enthuse me to play again, but its had the opposite affect.
Its soooo damned complicated. So many attributes to consider, so much jargon to learn (I was a tank previously and just hit things) I'm not sure I can be arsed.

Yes, but you said I need to have 2 accounts, and one of them to be a buffbot!!
I dont have any accounts! 2 seems like a bit of an investment

You don't need two accounts and a buff bot really, it just makes you stay alive a few seconds longer in RvR.

With some level 50 nuker blasting away at you, you're gonna go down quickly anyway. Maxed stats or not.

You dont need a buff bot at all, I hardly ever see people soloing with some healer stuck to their arse. Best way to level is in a decent group anyway.

Like I said. Better use for a bufbot is lvl'ing the lowbies not RvR. You can borrow bufbots in most guilds if you don't wanna pay for 2 accounts and, as mentioned, you don't need one if u are sociable and like to make groups :)

This game is very complicated. I'm not going to use a buffbot, but even using templates to build character profiles is a bit too much like work to me.

If I play again I'll just be a troll like before and kick arse. Wheeee!

Yeah, I've read some of his posts in the DAoC forum. He seems like a regular joe over there and not liable to preach and condescend people.

For example, if he were here I'm sure he'd correct my spelling, and insult my ethnic origin as well, if I had any.
