Finaly i can replace my crappy compu for a more decent one, only i cant figure out what videocard to buy. I have in mind a Radion 9600 or 9800 XT/pro or a Gf in the FX5900 range. I read DAOC was a game designed for GeForce cards so occasionally you will find little glitches with ATI cards. Eg. sun weapon and lw skins sometimes don't show up on ATI cards, even if you have the right drivers. So i really can use some advice.

have 2 pc:s, other is GF4TI and other ati 9600pro.
in 4 month what have these same time (update other from gf2 to ati) dont seen big differences.
prize/quality? and i take ati:s product.
otherwise? what you find cheaper? take it.

dont just buy newest card in marchets, buy card what is behind 1-2 generation, example 9800pro is good choice.
dont cost too much and still games work nice several years.

Doesn't matter, both are good though after reading a recent ATI article to do with their benchmarks i am sticking with nvidia for sure.Nvidia are more costly than ATI but seem to have more decent drivers from what i have experienced.

I would wait a couple of weeks and get yourself geforce 6800 ultra if you looking for the best card out there at the time, then that is it.It's pretty costly though and requires 450 watt psu.

I pride myself on being a gfx card guru, or i like to think i am. Either way, this is an interesting time to be gfx card shopping. As Sycho mentioned, ATI and nVidia's new products will soon find their way itnto retail, if not already and they are the ATI X800 and the nVidia Geforce 6800.
There isn't much between the 2 new cards, performance is suprisingly matched between the 2. One review may tell you one thing, the next will tell you another, a third will tell you their the same. It really goes to show that if reviewers can't agree there really must be little difference between them. One thing is for sure, the X80 is still working on the old R350 technology from the 9700 Pro. The Geforce is alot more technologically advanced giving you the capability of running Direct3D 9.0c when ut comes out. And also the ability to run SM3.0 that will be used in newer games like FarCry. Personally i'm going to get an nVidia card, which is saying something because i've been a hardcore camp ATI fan ever since its Radeon 9700 Pro.
Speaking of the 9700 Pro, the new ranges of cards are going to bef in limited supply and pricey for some time now. So looking back to the old ranges of the Radeon 9xxx and the Geforce FX, the Radeons win hands down in both the low end market and the high end. Mid range however, the FX 5950 is a good buy.

I'd go for a 9800 pro over an FX card. The FX range has some issues with SM2.0 performance which cause it to be a bad buy.
On the newer cards it's much less clear cut. Performance is quite comparable - nvidia is slightly faster in opengl, ati is a bit faster in D3D. Capabilities wise, there's really not much to distinguish them. People like to shout about SM3.0, but really almost nothing uses it and almost any effect you like can be done in SM2.0. Interesting note - Unreal3 doesn't use SM3.0 at all at present and that looks stunning.
I'd probably go with an X800 as I find ATI drivers to be more reliable and it's quite a lot faster for new D3D apps.

I used to be a big nvidia fan but recently have gone ATI - i currently run an x800-pro, 9800pro and 9700pro, all with no problems whatsoever in daoc. There was some issues with graphics glitches like cloaks looking "muddy" or washed out graphics on them - I also saw this on a friends 9600xt aswell - as usual tho ATI drivers were teh problem and new drivers fixed it. Personally I run 3pc's all xp3200's, 2 with nvidia chipsets and 1 with VIA - all run daoc with no problems at all so woudl recommend any of the cards mentioned above :)

Hola!

I only play Daoc so only has experience from testing cards with that game. So far the best card has been ATI 9800XT 256Mb. It runs 2xDaoc 1600x1200 smooth with TOA full effects on a 3GHz P4 with 2Gb Ram. I also tried an ATI 9600 and it worked well in lower resolutions. From NVidia i tried a 5900 but somehow it produced rather slow FPS. I dunno why really cuz it seemed like a nice card specwise.

Im not a GFX guru in any way but has the fortune of bein able to try all cards :)

I would take the ATI card cause of multiple reasons:
-price: for nearly the same FPS (as mentioned, there is litle diff.), ATI is much cheaper
-sound: if your PC should sound like a busy trainstation, buy an nVidia card (they are always tested the loudest ones)
-enterprise: yes, nVidia is a bunch of biatches (they were the ones taking away the ATI signs at some convention so ppl would only go to their place.....nice one)

Well ok, I have a Radeon 9500 Pro atm (had it tuned to 9700 Pro for a bit, but my cooler was not good enough and I'm still too lazy to replace it). DAoC works great in 1152*xxx (whatever matches, cba to calculate). I'm no FPS freak so as rather average person (atm, need money :p) I'd say take a Radeon 9800. The price/quality is very good and remember....the Pixel Shader 3.0 (on the 2 new GFX cards from ATI / nVidia) heats the card pretty well so that's at least a problem you won't have with a 9800 =) unless you have water cooling anyways or good passive heatpipes.

ps3.0 doesn't heat the card more than anything else actually. Also only nvidia has it - ATI has 2.x (not to be confused with 2.0). 6800s and x800s don;t run much hotter than 9800 pros really.

I'd like to point out that all X800's that reivewers have seen so far fun at mad temperages. Something along the lines of 80 degrees which is evident from it still using a hugely tweaked R350 core. They really need to roll out some new technology for me to go out and buy another one of their products.

This high temperature won't bother some, but those who like their overclocking will be lucky to get anything more out of the cards. Also it raises concerns of stability. ATI claim that it is not a concern, but i still don't like the idea of a 80 degree GPU inside my computer.

And someone mentioned the nVidia cooling solution being noisey. This was true, and they still use the same basic design as the 5800, dubbed: 'the leaf blower'. However the technology has come on by leaps and bounds and really is alot quieter now. Defenetly won't give you a headache anymore.

i tested this myself;

geforce4 Ti 4200 (128MB ram, 4x AGP, club 3d)

geforce FX59000XT (128ram aswell, point of view)

NO difference what so ever when playing games.. however in 3d benchmark my pc with ti4200 gets about 1500 points and FX5900XT 4900 :p

So, go for geforce 6xxx or radeon.

(If you can find a cheap Ti4800 you will be very happy aswell)
