So I've finally gotten around to uploading a video of my MRes project; my online activity has been very very low since starting this project for distraction/procrastination reasons but it is finally done.

The program will be freely available from the 2nd of April from www.tssengine.com but for now, here's the video. I'm trying to get as many views as possible before next thursday so any distribution of the video link would be highly appreciated... Enjoy! :)

That looks great :) Is it a full n-body simulation (no idea if that's even possible!) or do you consider interactions between the big star and each planet individually?

My 4th year project is on Lagrangian points & their use in space travel. I couldn't believe how complicated things get when you have more than two planets!

Is that showing your own physics + 3d engine or just the physics with some 3rd party 3d rendering?

It's not full body...Each planet has a star relationship and each moon has a planet relationship. The problem with it comes from where each body 'starts' when the program is executed. Because you add bodies in real-time, it would have to calculate for each object where it would need to be so it doesn't just pile into another object. It was beyond the remit of the course although not impossible to do post-release (Just extremely time consuming). I only used three threads so theoretically all of the calculations could be done on a fourth core so performance wouldn't be toooo much of an issue.

It was all done from scratch using DirectX and Qt libraries with C++... I probably should have mentioned that in the description. The HLSL code is going to be fully editable when released (Note the 'Reload .fx' button in the video for debugging purposes); it's my first attempt at visuals really so it's a bit clunky in parts.

Google Chrome + AdBlock and you'll cut out most adverts, not just on Youtube but the whole net :D

Anyone have any ideas of how I can get this seen by more people? I'm not going to resort to spam anywhere, I'm just no good at thinking like a marketeer...

Cheers guys, have found a space related sub-forum; I presume they frown heavily on posting within multiple sub-forums...especially for new users, heh. (Repped)

Just noticed it submitted to self.space. Is this open for others to view? I haven't used reddit before...

I could see your link if that's what you're asking.

I'm not sure it did work, I can see it with the direct link but I'm not seeing it listed in r/space/new.

Potential other subreddits:

r/astrophys
r/astronomy
r/cosmology
r/cosmos
r/auroraporn
r/spaceexploration

Yeah I was wondering whether I should be able to see my own posts, thanks for the heads up mate; do they generally get annoyed if you multi-post or is it accepted?

edit: Answered my own question, I wont multi-post ;)

I have no idea, there seems to be a very strict etiquette and you will be mocked and/or vilified if you go against it but it seems to be fairly tongue-in-cheek. I would try it again in whichever subreddit you think it belongs in (whether it be r/space or one of the others). I don't think peeps can see it (i've upvoted it and 3 others must've done from here as well, because it's not visible publicly) so no harm can come from it. He said, confidently.

I think the self thing is just because you wrote stuff and didn't directly link to anything. Maybe submit the link to the youtube vid instead of a text post...

Submitted to r/astronomy but the post didn't show up. I'm guessing it's because I haven't posted there before so am being labeled as a spammer. Will try again later.

Did you submit a link or a text post?

r/spacevideos looks pretty suitable...
For documentaries, time-lapses, simulations and other videos related to the universe. Sit back and relax, or learn something new!

Aye, the second post I tried was a video to no avail. I shall contribute this evening and return tomorrow with a direct link to the video. Thanks once again. :)

The planets look a bit tightly packed ?!?!

Yeah, I tried to show the scaling of objects in the later stages of the trailer; I think the initial video was recorded with the planets being around 370,000x scale with measurements being to the metre. To put that into perspective, the Earth itself would only need to be around 23500x scale iirc in order to be visually touching the sun. As such, there are many planets in the earlier videos which are actually inside the star but that's why I have included so many options. The video was done in single takes... you will be able to create much MUCH more personalised representations with the released version.

Ultimately, if you scaled everything back to 1x, you would see very very little from planet to planet (DirectX/TV size/human perspective considerations) so I've allowed scaling for planets upto around 200,000,000x. Ultimately, we don't know the nature of stars which we have yet to discover. There may be small rocks not yet detectable orbiting neighbouring brown dwarves which would require a scale MUCH different to that of VY Canis Majoris. A single DirectX unit represents one kilometre; the systems shown have radii from nigh on single kilometre satellites upto planetary distances of Terametres.

Your teenage dreams were much less depraved than mine it seems.
