Been thinking of this, having discussed it with a friend about what is and what isnt art. Now im curious of what FH OT'ers think of this matter? how can we classify art?

Top Gear claims Art is something which has no other use than just to be looked at and go hmmmmmmmm-->this was in reply to a comment that a good looking Alfa (think it was Alfa) was art

Art seems to mean a lot of different things to different people, its hard to say. Some people say a pile of bricks is art, I say its a pile of bricks.

For me its something thats nice/beautiful to look at, but with that said, there is Art which is also difficult to look at.

Art is something you create which has thought/meaning behind it.

That's why a picture such as "Virgin on the Rocks" is classed as Art.

Yet Tracy (OMFG I hate this bitch) Emin's retarded bed is also classed as Art.

I like to think art is something that is beautiful or interesting in a non-functional way.

There's a bit of a crossover in architecture (beautiful and functional), but generally that's how I'd describe it.

who decides what is art? i mean, if an artist creates a piece of art and decides its not art but 1 bystander sees it and claims it is.

and what about mass murdering, can that be classified as art?
saw this youtube clip about subconsional art. Buffing graffiti is considered art in the eyes of people, but the person who did it did NOT do it to create art. so is it art?

well. if anything can be art. can mass murdering be art?

putting a fish into a blender can, butchering a horse and putting it into preservating fluids in glasses can. If the mass murder think its art or a loony fan think its art, is it then art?

Well I guess alot of maniacs consider it art when they murder people but i suppose considering something art is the same as considering something sexy; there are the "normal" things that almost anyone likes and then there are people who gets a kick out of eating shit.
I myself think most of the stuff people consider art is crap really. I talked to a girl who thought that recent movie with the barber who killed his custommers and then had them served in pies as art. (can't remember the name of the movie. Barbershop of horror? it was a musical)

Exactly, so to get alittle philosophical I suppose you could say everything is art aswell as nothing is art since someone may always consider it as such and nothing is art as no one can decide what another person should consider is art.

And yeah of what I heard, that movie sounds insane.

Art is something thats hard to define, because there are a lot of things now that we consider art, when they were created, the maker had no concept of art, and didnt create them for artistic purposes. Ancient greek/roman/stone age, iron age etc pots and utensils, even murals on ceilings and walls werent really created for artistic purposes, they were functioning as decoration, or functionality, which dosent stop them being beautiful (more craft-like in that case).
No one will ever agree on what is and what isnt art.

insanely bad. there was about 1 line of spoken dialogue in the whole thing. It was a piss poor film.

A few months ago i did actually read about some "artist" in a easter european country (i think) who took a homeless person, tied him up and opened it as an exhibition. He refused to feed the homeless guy and let him die and somehow got away with it because it was art. What the fuck.

art is bits of culture carrying a price tag , so if you label it art and can sell it its certified art :)

Anything physical or conceptual which one person finds aesthetically pleasing or otherwise of objective or subjective interest or significance is art.
