I'm sorry you've been on this forum since Nov 2001 and you are moaning about your one thread being ruined??

All threads in here get "ruined" at some point....others sooner than later....

But then again some get saved from their downward spiral.

Come on stop being so grumpy all of a sudden!!

I'm as far detached from lad culture as a rock in a desert, yet I still love football. Personal preference really, but I don't really see why you and others felt the need to ruin the thread with your comments. This is an even further reason why a sports forum would be nice, so that those of us who actually like football can talk about in peace and we can to an extent peacefully coexist with fans of other sports. Personally I hate Rugby, but if somebody started a topic on it here I wouldn't butt in.
Theres lots of rocks in deserts :)
I'm not trying to ruin your thread, I'm expressing an opinion. This is after all a democracy.

I find F1 pretty boring - how's that? Not keen on cricket either. As for the 'no brain pricks' and pay argument we've had it before and it's futile going into it again.

Fine by me, I'll try not to lose any sleep over it.
However you could try and think of a football player that has been successful, other than being a pundit, after his career on pitch. There may be one or two, although I can't think of any, but how many players are there?

:)

If he's going to be christened then he'll have to be christian surely?

How would you determine their success; by their fame? That's pretty short sighted. Most players run businesses, or stay in football in some respect. Most football managers and staff are former players.

Not by fame, I was thinking more in a commercial arena tbh.
Perhaps running businesses and so on, which would not include being a pub landlord. :)
I'm genuinely not aware of any that have gone on to be "captains of industry".
Footballers are not alone in this, popstars and actors often end up on the shit tip too.

I'm not moaning about it being ruined :) It was a passing comment, that's all. Was hoping to have a discussion with somebody but that's not going to happen. My Dad's the only other person I know who likes football and he doesn't give a shit about anything outside of Swindon, heh.

I'm not grumpy either. Well perhaps I am, but oh well!

I used to be into footy, avid Liverpool fan and always played for the school footy team, I was into it.
That was then, football now is shit, I stand by my comment.

You were obviously never an avid Liverpool "fan" then. If you're a fan of your football club it ends up being like a branding for life (and a good one).

I'm as far removed for "lads" behaviour as can be aswell. If you ever go to matches you'll find that it's very much a "family" occasion. Generations of people go and enjoy it. Friendly, not-violent. Good fun as an away supporter or as a home fan. Banter - not fighting. (In the VAST majority of cases).

How many times did you make the trip to Anfield when you were younger?

(Oh - and 36 million people watched England vs Argentina in THIS COUNTRY ALONE) :D

I know you're not trying to ruin the thread, I think you've got enough respect for others (and rightly so at your age) not to do that. I'm not going to try and stop you doing expressing your opinion either, in fact I'm all for people expressing their opinions. Like I said to dys it just annoyed me that you felt the need to spoil what was starting to be a decent thread with a pretty unneccesary comment. I'm not the thought-police :>

IAN WRIGHT WRIGHT WRIGHT! Yeah, not many admittedly. But as you quite rightly said before, those who are well known enough to be successful after their football career is over have earnt enough money not to have to work ever again. Anyway, many footballers remiain within the game anyway in non-playing positions. Some even at grass roots level. But then couldn't the same be said for most sportsmen? Admittedly football is the most widely covered and as such players are likely to become much more famous as a result of this but that comment probably covers all sports.

It's fun being a Swindon fan in the middle of Oxfordshire :D

Exactly. I go with my Dad week in week out and the people who sit around us are the same. My Dad's brothers are all Swindon fans as well, it's a family thing. If I ever have children I'd take them to Swindon Town as well. I've seen one instance of violence this season and that was against QPR and it was just QPR fans who had left mid-game because they were getting thrashed. Generally all the idiots sit in one area together which makes them easier contain at the County Ground at least.

Dood, one of my prized possesions is a 12x10 card. In the middle of that card is Shanks' autograph, alround his are Clemence, Keegan, Hughes, Thompson etc, they had won the FA cup 5 days previously
Never went to Anfield, lived miles away and folks not into footy. Been since though, couple of times in the last few years, entertaining American colleagues, got bored both times, big games too.
Used to help print the Goodison tickets as a lad, my Nan managed a shop next door to the ground, print shop next to that, and I used to frequently go on Saturdays with my Grandad, both first and second team matches, if I was staying with them.
I do watch World Cup footy, it is after all "the pinnacle" of the sport, pity we are so shit at it. That said I also watch the Grand National and have no real interest in Racing.

edit/
I did always watch the matches on TV. Up until I was about 14/15.

No that was worldwide, compared to worldwide album sales. The viewing figures for UK alone were around 10 million each game (Argentina, Nigeria, Sweden, Denmark, Brazil).

Figures were even higher for 1998, around 24 million for England v Argentina the previous time.
