Lo all, i recently upgraded from a 466 celeron to a 1GHz P3 and from 192MB of RAM to 448MB (SDRAM) and I upgraded my GeForce 256 to an Elsa Gladiac 511 GeForce 2 MX. Now on CS when i run through smoke from SGs i am VERY jerky, please help me. If the only thing to do is reduce Smoke complexity wat should i set it to?

make sure you are using opengl and not direct3d, and erm is the gf2mx better for fps than a gf256?

dog,

In your config.cfg file add (or update) the line

fastsprites "2.000000"

this will reduce the complexity of the smoke and should reduce the jerkage

You have to be f*cking joking, no way. GeForce 2MX 32MB not better than my GeForce 256??? Im not sure wat to do, some people have told me to alter my config file others r telling me to use Open GL. Personally I think the Open GL is the correct solution however im not sure, plz advise. Also to change to Open GL do u mean just change it in the Counter Strike video modes options? Or some other place like display settings, cheers DogDough. Getting shot through smoke??? lol

Ok, this isnt particularly related but how do i fine tune my computer? I have a list of Open GL options ill read to u

-Enable Buffer Region Extension (ticked)
-Allow the dual planes extension to use local video memory (tickd)
-Use fast linear-mipmap-linear filtering (not ticked)
-Enable anisotropic linear filtering (not ticked)
-Disable support for advanced CPU instruction sets (not ticked)

Should i do anything with custom Open GL settings?

Antialiasing is controlled by applications

Direct 3D

-Enable fog table emulation (ticked)
-Adjust Z-buffer depth to rendering depth if unequal (ticked)
-Enable alternate depth buffering technique (not ticked)
-Display logo when running direct 3D applications (not ticked)

Mipmap detail level is set at High Image quality, before it was at best but i changed it.

Sorry for posting so many but, sorry when i go through smoke it doesnt jerk, it is like im covered in grease, if i try and move my X-hair to the left a tiny bit it will keep moving like it is on ice, im pretty sure my GeForce 2 MX400 is better than my old GeForce 256, I used to get 15fps now i get 72fps, but i have doubled my processer speed.

It's the opengl thing. Switch to OpenGL in the Half-Life/CS video modes menu. If you still have problems with smoke *then* do the fastsprites 2 thing in yer config.

And er, they're right, most times the GF256 (especially a DDR one) will give you better fps than a GF2MX. The MX is a cut-down, cheapo version of the GF2.

Oh yes!!! Open GL gets rid of the smoke problem!! cheers guys. U have more RAM than me?? i have 448!!! noooo im defeated. Also i refuse to listen to this talk of the 2 MX being worse than the 256, i refuse to admit i just wasted 48 squid on a worse card, I paid 180 quid for the Geforce 256 by the way, i was one of the 1st people to get that card

Gf256 is faster, get a refund on yer MX.

Anyway you may want to click on "disable antaliasing for all appliacations" radio button. You dont want antialiasing slowing u down -especially on a car that cant handle it.

You can enable ansi-tropic filtering in opengl and direct3d if you want, it will improve video quality at a very slight loss of fps (that you wont notice in HL anyway).

Dont enable the other options that are already disabled, they will either reduce image quality, or image quality and fps.

Why buy it from hongkong? Thye are only £60 quid here.

Couldnt you have got a gf2 ultra or gf3 dirt cheap over there?

Is my new geforce 2 400mmx any good? It replaced an old tnt2 m64. Now the new card has to be better. right??

Please say yes.

its ALRIGHT chaps.i got an mx and it works just fine.i may upgrade for an ultra or pro later, as they should be getting cheaper , but for the time being the mx is fine.no point ASKING if it's a good card, you're the one looking at it!

Rough ordering of cards mentioned in the last few posts, slowest first, fastest last (note i said *rough* ordering - some of them are very close in speed and it'll depend on other factors which exactly gives you the best fps):

tnt : tnt2 : gf256 : gf2mx : gf256-ddr : gf2 : gf2ultra: gf3

Anything is better than the total waste of time geforce 256, i was acidently sent a 256 instead of the ddr when they first came out. Playing q3 at 1024 res was no different than the v3 i had played the game on the day before. When i got my ddr a couple of days later, the difference at 1024 was about 50 fps. Why they botherd with the sd256 is beyond me, they were shite.
Still thats all history now, the 256ddr is collecting dust on my shelf, it doesn't even make my 2nd box:eek:
